Grand Cherokee sales...what could have been...

From wikipedia, here are year by year sales of the Grand Cherokee

1993-1998: ~2,000,000 or ~333,333 per year
1999: 300,031
2000: 271,723
2001: 223,612
2002: 224,233
2003: 207,479
2004: 182,313
2005: 213,584
2006: 139,148
2007: 120,937
2008: 73,678
2009: 50,328
2010: 84,635

I bring this up...what if Jeep had gone upscale with the Grand Cherokee back in 2005 instead of going with cheap interiors...mostly plastic, very little wood, front passenger's seat not full way powered, cheap leather/vinyl, very cheap carpet, etc.

Even in a harsh recession, it appears the best equipped more luxurious Grand Cherokees are being well received and selling. Had Jeep went upscale in 2005 could they have avoided bankruptcy and done well with a much larger market share???

Re: Grand Cherokee sales...what could have been...

Sales drop had little to nothing to do with the interiors, etc. It was the near collapse of the economy in 08.

What about 2006 and 2007 when people were still cashing out their home equity. The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee (which I own) is a nice vehicle but the interiors are cheap cheap cheap. After 5 or 6 new GC's I was sorta looking to go upscale and considered a RR, etc. I'm sure a lot of the RR crowd, etc. could have seriously considered a more upscale GC.

Re: Grand Cherokee sales...what could have been...

I still say it had to do with the economy. The NYMEX price for a barrel of oil shot up to into the 70's and people curbed their purchases of SUV's.

But hey what do I know? lol

Re: Grand Cherokee sales...what could have been...

From going from 300,000 to a continuous decline (recession or not) to 50,000 is pretty dramatic. Clearly Jeep wasn't responding to the market. Thankfully the 2011 is a lot better!

Re: Grand Cherokee sales...what could have been...

Economy + high fuel prices pushing people to more efficient vehicles + vehicle specific items = fewer sales.

For me, I would have a 2008 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7L V8 had there been a shade more headroom. I would still have the thing and would not have traded it on the WK2. Instead, I bought a Patriot, and while it was fine for what it was, it was no GC.

The WK had a so-so interior and was nowhere near as roomy as the vehicle size indicated. At the same time, the competition was nicer, roomier, and more efficient, while the ability of consumers to purchase the things declined.

It was a multi-variable equation.

Yes, there are several variables at work but other vehicles that consumed just as much gas and were more expensive (some much more) didn't fall off like the WK did. Clearly, the market was not impressed and when Jeep failed to address the market response after 2005, the market went for other vehicles. The new WK2 was pretty darn critical in carrying Jeep forward and thankfully Jeep did it well. Even for the 2005 late builds they were having trouble selling....I got $9,600 off my loaded Limited WK...the best deal I have ever gotten on a new vehicle.

Re: Grand Cherokee sales...what could have been...

It was not only the improvements in the WK2 that sold me. In Canada, the price drop was substantial (several thousands) compared to the earlier models, even though we still pay much more than US prices when currency conversion is considered. The WK2 wins on features and value. That did not always apply.
