Grand Cherokee vs the new Range Rover Sport

People here might be biased but my lease ends one year from now on my '15 Overland and I'm curious about this new generation Range Rover Sport..

I love the way the Range Rover Sport looks and drives and I can pick up a used 2014 relatively for the same price as a new Summit I suspect or maybe even Overland by next December.

Forgetting the fact that some people buy them as status symbols I drove one and really like the ride and the materials used are definitely of better quality than the jeep. But then again, look at the price tag. Definitively more solid feeling than the Grand Cherokee and I'm willing to get one in spite of their reputation just to try it out. God knows I've had more than my share of problems with the 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland, hence the reason I'm now in a '15 instead and pretty much problem free.

Just thinking I may want to change it up but my problem is the options on a well equipped Range Rover Sport really don't come close to a fully loaded new Grand Cherokee. Answering my own questions, I know. Just really more curious about this vehicle than serious about buying one.

Thoughts welcome but really no need to bash the Range Rover. They have their problems, yes but in spite of that they really are nice rides. However, if I jump into another leased Jeep they "may" make me an unbelievable deal so that could definitely change my thought process. Realistically, another Jeep may be more practical especially comfort options.

Unbiased, intellectual responses welcomed.

Obviously cost is the issue otherwise you wouldn't be asking the question here right? I am the same way, should I get an X used car for the same price as something of lower class than when new? Having said that I always end up leasing new just because I don't want any problems, as much as I love the RR I would not want a used one. On the other end of the spectrum a friend of mine always buys 1-2 year old cars and keeps them for 3-4 years with warranty and never had issues so theres always a positive side of things. I personally would get the Summit which is what I am gearing toward next.

I hear ya. I've had a few WK2s already and thought I would just mix it up by trying one of these for a bit. But it really does come down to a cost and benefits factor for me also. Just uncertain about the Range Rover and if I get a used one I'd be spending $ to extend the warranty. Not sure it's worth it when I can get a brand new loaded Summit for the price of a used RRS HSE V6. Options are weird on that SUV also. To get it up to the same specs as a Summit it would have to be ordered that way--so not a stock option from the manufacturer. Doesn't even come with remote start feature and during those cold Winters and hot Summers that option comes in VERY handy! Just a bit conflicted is all...

The RRS shares all of its underpinnings with the Land Rover LR4. Granted the body language lines might be more desirable depending on your choice of aesthetics, but it would be more cost effective new or used to check out a LR4

As others have said, I also considered getting a slightly used, more luxurious vehicle for around the same price of my Summit. Range Rovers were probably on my list at some point. The Range Rovers have a higher "status" associated with them. I prefer something a little more low key. For me, Jeep styling is also more timeless. I still like the look of most prior year Grand Cherokees. With the Ranges, I feel like when the new models come out, they find a way to make the older ones somehow look instantly out of date. My wife likes the Range Rovers, she keeps telling me I should have gotten one. But she is more flashy than me. I also read somewhere that cost of ownership (long term) is horrible on Land Rovers.

Good Luck- In the end, they are both awesome vehicles. It's not like you are comparing the Jeep to a Nissan Rouge. Also, it is just a car, and whatever you side will be reversible... might come at a price, but at least it is a reversible. There are more important things in life to lose sleep over. ;)

Y'all have a point. They'd have to go with "since 1947" should they want to implement an egg.

I hear roughly the same level of horror stories about both LR and Jeep GC, which having owned two GC's, I tend to take with a grain of salt. Although if I did get one that lemon'd on me, I'd dump the thing as fast as possible.
Allegedly the Ford era improved Land Rover reliability a bit, where the horror stories I hear now are more around the gewgaws like those in the GC that seem to have similar gremlins on a lot of vehicles.

Both are very nice vehicles. I personally prefer the Range Rover, particularly for long haul trips I like to take, but the preference/price just came out far better for the Jeep. Which oddly enough, the local RR dealer observed--that Jeep is cutting into their low end models around here.

If money is an issue for you, why even consider getting a RR... What are the benefits ....Ride quality? That's worth the risk of getting a used car that someone else surely passed gas in? How do you know an over anxious teenage couple didn't fornicate in the back seat? All that risk for a barely noticeable ride improvement. Smh... I've never understood making a concession to buy a used car over a new one? Ummmmm... Let me compare this brand new Camry to a 6 year old Mercedes... Just can't decide...
Can you tell I hate used cars(I know I'm in the minority)... But seriously buy the RR it's much cooler than a jeep. Plus I'll be really impressed. [emoji6]

I like RRs but I wouldn't want one used. I would stick with vehicles in your price range. Don't set yourself up for headaches. I personally would rather have an X5, they look like a bargain compared to a RR. And a GC looks like a bargain compared to an X5. I guess it's all about your budget and what kind of status you want to portray.

I seriously considered a Range Rover Sport when I shopped the WK2.

What I liked was that the RR Sport is almost as capable as the WK2 SRT on-road, while it also comes close to matching the regular WK2 (Overland, Limited, Laredo) for off-road use.

What I didn't like was how it looks compared to the 2014/2015 WK2 inside & out. I also wasn't very happy with the price (despite the fact that you basically get the capabilities of 2 WK2s in 1 vehicle). And Land Rover reliability actually makes Jeep's look good!

So I decided to get a 2012 & then a 2015 Overland and I'm very happy with that decision.

The current RR Sport Supercharged is faster than a WK2 SRT -in a straight line, not sure about a track- and can still go rock crawling as well as a Jeep. It is an impressive combo. You can't go wrong with either.

The SVR is a bit faster

But here it costs 3x as much

And if I wanted faster you'd buy the turbo Porsche or the AMG

The jeep did well, but was on the optional pzeros the svr did well too but wasn't on the optional tyres which it set the ring time on, would love to see some more hp in the jeep, 500 is a nice figure, then on the summer tyres I'd love to see them take it to the ring again and see what it'd do, the took the 5spd there, I'm sure a 2016 would be a number of seconds better

I would absolutely rock a new Range Rover along with the above -referenced blonde. Alas, I am married and I cannot afford one new.

But I am surprised that nobody referenced Doug Demuro yet. For those who don't know about him, he purchased a used Range Rover from CarMax, complete with a warranty and in a relatively short amount of time, he started replacing most things electronic on the car. Free of charge. Here's his story:

My Range Rover’s CarMax Warranty Is Now Half Over And It's Saved Me More Than $6000

And if you read Jalopnik, you would have recently learned (within the past 2 weeks) that he has purchased a used Aston Martin. With a warranty thru Aston Martin.

Peeps,

I started a similar thread on the Range Rover forum site to get input from real owners over there as well. Your responses here have been very helpful. Thought you might be interested in the read of their responses to Grand Cherokee vs RRS. Interestingly, they are not bashing the Jeep but making real educated comparisons between the two. In fact, many were bashing on their own Range Rovers. Enjoy!

My wife wants to look at a RR this spring. 2 things make me nervous....Nearest dealer is 150 miles away and I don't really want to get that " I have my nose in the air" look from my friends and neighbors. That's why the JGC was a perfect fit for me. It is a classy vehicle without being over the top pretentous.

I agree that is one thing i like about the jeep, its a chysler product there is zero prestiege with it. You buy the jeep for what it is and because you like what it is not because of a name. The number of people i see that will scrape and save, barrow and mortage their life to buy the most base lowest grade BMW or RR that at that level is not much better than a honda always astonishes me. Just so they can be seen behind those three letters and somehow believe you have made it in life even though you are in financial ruin on paper. Not saying everyone that buys a BMW or RR is like that they are fine machines and if you like them and they are in your range buy it. I just see far too much of the need to be seen even though they are on the verge of bankruptcy i want to vomit sometimes lol.

If you like the RR for what it is and its in your range then buy it and enjoy it. The people who know you in life already know you are not the type of person that feels the need to flaunt a label to feel important. Those type people stick out like a sore thumb.

Those R Rovers look great in two places...In the dealership before a purchase and in the service bays where it will spend the majority of its life. It can't spend a lot of time on the streets because of of the current manufacturing process and until that quality control is changed,in the dealership and in the service bays is where they will always look their best. Oh yeah I forgot one. On the back of a flat bed tow truck.

I think my '08 Jeep GC Limited 's' CRD looks pretty darn fine ...on that flatbed!

Yep...that's diesel that spewed onto the road while trying to start it.

This incident brought the total warranty claims amount to $14,380!....in 67,000km.

Turbo+, fuel pump+, and a tie rod end.

And....I bought another one...doh.

Reminds me of the guy who said: "Of course those Fiat diesel's are good. If they weren't, I wouldn't have bought so damn many of them!" :D
