Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR Price as tested: $126,360

The $49,100 v6 jeep takes third place and they are complaining about it not having ELSD. But if they would have requested one with the V8 (or Diesel) for a lousy $3200 more than it would have had the rear ELSD they were bitching about and still cost $74,060 less than the SVR. The GC 5.7 is certainly no match for the SVR power but wouldn't it have made a little more sense to at least try to option the GC in a way that would bring it as close as possible to the vehicles that are, $36,960 and $77,260 more? especially since they are not just comparing them but rating them 1st 2nd 3rd and money appears to be absolutely no object at all.
I agree with both the comment on the choice of powertrain on the Jeep (which would have added the ELSD for a minimal cost compared to the price of the other vehicles) as well as with the idiocy of some of the commenters. Whereas the Jeep was not elegant in its climb and the commenters moaned about the ELSD availability, it appears that it did well compared to the Sport Td6, but on the other hand the same Terrain Response 2 traction control logic worked wonders in the Sport SVR with an active locking diff.

Jeep

Quote:
Even though our tester depended completely on electronic traction control, it impressed us with its capabilities on the trail. “ABS and traction control sound like a jackhammer, but the darn thing motors overs obstacles and climbs,” a judge wrote. On the hillclimb almost every judge agreed that there was nothing elegant about the Grand’s climb.
Range Rover Sport HSE Td6
Quote:
The Sport Td6’s nemesis was the hillclimb. The traction control system got all sorts of knotted up in the loose holes on our test hill and the system refused to deliver power to the wheels that needed it. One judge summed it up by writing, “Struggles with offset holes. Brake traction control system stops forward progress.” It was on the hillclimb we wished we could completely cancel the traction control on the vehicle.

Range Rover Sport SVR
Quote:
The Terrain Response 2 system, which controls the four-wheel-drive system, worked incredibly well, and we found that the “Auto” setting worked in most situations to instantaneously select the best settings for the type of terrain. Nonetheless, we’d still like a way to completely disengage the electronic controls and have complete control over the vehicle off-road.
So there you go: they bashed the traction control system in the Jeep (which did well without the rear locking diff) and praised it in the Range Rover where it worked well only when combined with the Active Rear Locking Differential in the SVR.

Moral of the story: OFF-ROAD, a V6 diesel or V8 Hemi Jeep with a rear ELSD (on paper) would be more better off-road than whatever Range Rover can put on their cars, if the lowly V6 and QT-2 can "match" in off-road prowess the mighty SVR with 250 more horsepower and/or torque and an Active Rear Locking Differential.

Re: Grand Cherokee vs the new Range Rover Sport

My wife wants to look at a RR this spring. 2 things make me nervous....Nearest dealer is 150 miles away and I don't really want to get that " I have my nose in the air" look from my friends and neighbors. That's why the JGC was a perfect fit for me. It is a classy vehicle without being over the top pretentous.

JGC and VW Touareg are the most classy vehicles without the asshole image in my opinion at least.

I agree that is one thing i like about the jeep, its a chysler product there is zero prestiege with it. You buy the jeep for what it is and because you like what it is not because of a name. The number of people i see that will scrape and save, barrow and mortage their life to buy the most base lowest grade BMW or RR that at that level is not much better than a honda always astonishes me. Just so they can be seen behind those three letters and somehow believe you have made it in life even though you are in financial ruin on paper. Not saying everyone that buys a BMW or RR is like that they are fine machines and if you like them and they are in your range buy it. I just see far too much of the need to be seen even though they are on the verge of bankruptcy i want to vomit sometimes lol.

If you like the RR for what it is and its in your range then buy it and enjoy it. The people who know you in life already know you are not the type of person that feels the need to flaunt a label to feel important. Those type people stick out like a sore thumb.

Re: Grand Cherokee vs the new Range Rover Sport

Those R Rovers look great in two places...In the dealership before a purchase and in the service bays where it will spend the majority of its life. It can't spend a lot of time on the streets because of of the current manufacturing process and until that quality control is changed,in the dealership and in the service bays is where they will always look their best. Oh yeah I forgot one. On the back of a flat bed tow truck.

Re: Grand Cherokee vs the new Range Rover Sport

I think my '08 Jeep GC Limited 's' CRD looks pretty darn fine ...on that flatbed!

Yep...that's diesel that spewed onto the road while trying to start it.

This incident brought the total warranty claims amount to $14,380!....in 67,000km.

Turbo+, fuel pump+, and a tie rod end.

And....I bought another one...doh.

Reminds me of the guy who said: "Of course those Fiat diesel's are good. If they weren't, I wouldn't have bought so damn many of them!"

Irrelevant in the grand scheme but the 2008 diesel engine in the Grand Cherokee was a Mercedes unit, not a FIAT.

That's exactly what I was thinking, wasn't sure if I missed something or not.

So very true. It took me a while to finally understand why BMW took away the dipstick from under the hood.... Most now have one in the drivers seat.
