Current production of MY15 JGC have a new paint system in the plant that is supposed to provide better quality finishes. That system was physically installed in late December 2014 and gradually brought on-line over the following couple of months.

Re: Has anyone seen the new paint?

While I'm not completely impressed with the quality of the paint job itself, the Cherry Red is gorgeous. Out in the sun, the metalic flakes really sparkle and it's just dark enough a color to grab reflections, which deepens the look.

My issue is all the semi-hidden areas where they left simply primered, particularly the insides of the wheel wells above the soft covers and below the cargo area. Even some of the engine bay paint seems thin in places.

My hood also has a thin spot that is visible at certain angles in certain light. I'm trying to decide if it bothers me enough to have them fix it.

Re: Has anyone seen the new paint?

I don't have a 2015, but I have a late production 2014 Summit that I just bought new last week and I was actually very impressed with the quality of the paint and im one of those picky as heck car guys that loves to detail.
So even though I cant contribute to this thread regarding the new paint process, my '14 Summit has a extremely nice paint job IMO. Looks great!

Re: Has anyone seen the new paint?

They went to a water base paint system , I don't know if that an improvement, My Jeep looks like it was painted with a roller, Thick on top and thin on the hood and the doors and gas door are shades off, Dealer said it was a Jeep thing and they all look that way. It's sad when the "KIA" has a better factory paint.

Do you have a source for this? I knew they updated the paint process, but hadn't heard about going to water based paints. Is it as durable as solvent based?

Pretty much everything is moving toward water-based. Everyone is going "green".

Water-based paints can be as long lasting and look as good...but you have to know what you're doing.

I'm not sure the guys doing the factory paint are there yet.

Now, I'm not saying the paint guys aren't good at painting, but the assembly line is hardly the place to hone your technique.

The fact is, though, I'm seeing far more alarming things like foreign material caught under the paint surface and lack of paint coverage in places. Stuff like that has nothing to do with changes in paint formulas. That's a sign of quality control issues.

It's not just paint, either. I'm seeing alignment issues on trim that are baked into the build, not something that's "incorrect".

Re: Has anyone seen the new paint?

Just a minor thing...the referenced finishes are not "water based"...they are "water borne". Water is the carrier, but there are still solvents involved in the actual finish. This reduces VOC (volatile organic components) which makes for greater safety and less environmental impact. They are a little more tricky in that you cannot thin them very much without negative impact to the quality of the finish, so matching the formulation and the spray gear without need for altering the viscosity is very important. And these water borne finishes aren't really new...they are well developed...but are just getting used more and more due to legislative actions and practicality.

Note, I'm not saying if Jeep is using these new finishes...I don't know. But I personally wouldn't worry about it myself.

I had a look at a few white ones post upgrade and I couldn't tell the difference between that and pre upgrade. Still noticeable orange peel on both. Imagine the darker colours could be easier to pick out the difference.

Re: Has anyone seen the new paint?

Before the volatile organic compounds (VOC) regulations came into force it was common for paints to have 75%+ solvent content (that is, 75% or more of the solvent would evaporate into the air) now to be compliant with VOC regulations paint is limited to a maximum 50% VOC content or less.

South Coast California Air Quality District (AQMD) now requires that multi-stage clear coats have a 250g/L (2.1 lb/gal.) VOC emissions rating or better AQMD, Rule 1151 went into effect July 01, 2008, with complete conversion expected by December 31, 2008. Canada's new regulation matches California's, but won't be required until 2010.

Single-stage clear coats will require 340 g/L (2.8 lb. /gal.) emission rating in California, 420 g/L (3.5 lb. /gal.) in Canada. WBCC falls into the single application category of 1.2 lb. /gal. VOC, well below EPA, California and Canada's standardsWater-based automotive paint - are essentially low solids paints (up to 60% waterborne solvent), but they are legal because de-ionized water is used as the solvent, as opposed to volatile organic compounds (VOC).in reality, water-based (waterborne) automotive paint finishing is actually not that new; PPG water-based paint has been used by some OEMs since the early 1990s

Switching to waterborne from solvent-based automotive refinishing paints is becoming more popular in the U.S. for health and environmental reasons, as well as stricter environmental regulations in California and Canada. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and collision repair shops in Europe and some OEMs in the United States already use waterborne paints extensively

[ Like I said my 2015 Silver GC looks like it was painted with a roller, Took it back the next day to dealer who said it was a Jeep Problem and they all looked that way, For the high end Jeep this is sad when the KIA has the better factory paint.]

My 2015 Granite built in early February, 2015 had two paint defects.

One could've been a small paint chip during transit, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

The other one was a big area (2 inches by 1 inch) above the front passenger door. It looked like a layer of paint was missed. It was weird. I wish I had taken a picture.

My dealership fixed both and did a great job.
