Hate my Summit. You?

Oh, how I hate my Summit! Let me list the ways...

First thing first, maybe I'm jaded? I had one of the first 2011 Overland's in the US with the saddle brown leather that I special ordered and waited months for. I plainly loved that vehicle. I had BMW X5's for about 8 years prior to that vehicle and I became an overnight Jeep salesman. That car was wonderful...

After such great experiences with the 2011 Overland I was just ITCHING for the 2014 Summit. I couldn't wait any longer so I bumped up to a new Summit about 6 months ago, WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS!!!

List of Issues I have on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Edition:

- After 5.5k miles I'm averagine 13.8 mpg! (V8, 4x4, driving full time in eco-mode, 95% highway driving AND I drive like an old man!) If anyone can tell me why I get the worst possible MPG from the new fancy 8 speed tranny I'm all ears...

- Automatic headlights stay on while literally driving into bright sun in the middle of the day. In turn, this causes the displays to go dark (night settings) so that you can't see the displays.

- Memory seat's "easy exit" mode stop working months ago.

- Remote start functions but doesn't coincide with the climate control. *With that said, what's the point of remote start?!?!

- HUGE DELAYS / ISSUES with any and all functionality relating to the touchscreen. Software is OOZING with bugs. 5 second to minute delays on functionality. Example, changing the radio station, navigation, etc.

- Horn constantly honks 3 times when attempting to lock the vehicle. (The 3 shorts horn blasts is a warning that the key is SUPPOSEDLY in the car and the car cannot lock.) But alas, the key is in my pocket and I'm 20 FEET AWAY!

- Off road setting 1 or 2 while going over the slightest bump at 1 mile an hour sounds like there's someone under the hood banging on it with a rubber mallet. BANG! Like the shocks are going to shoot through the hood.

- And finally, my favorite... sometimes the car just won't start. For no reason.

Personal Dislikes:

- AC does not blow hard / cold enough for any summer anywhere in the country

- Rear view camera when in reverse beeps CONSTANTLY to warn of movement. This cannot be turned off. *There is always movement behind a vehicle there should be a setting to turn this obnoxious noise off.

- My last Jeep had the best steering wheel of any vehicle I ever had. I absolutely loved it. My new Summit has the steering wheel of Honda Civic. Thanks Jeep.

*IS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCING ANY OF THE ABOVE? IF SO, HOW HAVE YOU REMEDIED?

*IF ANYONE CAN HELP GIVE INSIGHT INTO WHY MY $60K CHEROKEE IS SUCH A POS PLEASE DO. MECHANICS HERE SHRUG THEIR SHOULDERS.

Re: Hate my Summit. You?

What has your dealer said so far? What have they attempted to fix? Or are you just ranting and not bothered taking it to your dealer yet?

Looks like 90% of your problems can be solved with a software update.

Maybe you have a bad ground...which you can find by searching the troubleshooting section.

AC blows hard and cold for me, and it's the nicest steering wheel I've ever had....and heated...so nice.

Also, if you paid $60k...you got ripped off. I'd be pissed too

Re: Hate my Summit. You?

You would serve yourself well by reading this forum, and the owner's manual. When your done you will have the solutions to most, if not all of your problems. Reading might take a little longer than complaining, but it would be silly to expect people to retype all the answers when they are already out there.

When you have addressed the issues, don't forget to come back and tell us how much you love your Summit.

Re: Hate my Summit. You?

That's pretty bad gas mileage w/ ECO on full time and 95% highway. I average the same thing (13.8) in my '13 Summit, but I don't have same ECO mode as you and I also drive 90% city. Weird.

Not sure how reading the manual would help with the gas mileage......

I like you traded in an older Grand Cherokee for a new model. I was worried because I had a 2012 Loredo X that was perfect, not a single issues. But the SRT kept calling my name and when the 2014 came out it started screaming my name. But I kept reading about all these issues with the 2014's. I then realized that I read the same thing when I bought my 2012.

Maybe I am lucky but so far my SRT has been wonderful. I know that can all change.

I feel terrible reading about cases like the gentleman in this thread but for every bad story I have to think that there are 1000+ good ones, otherwise Jeep would not be in business

I am not posting this to rub in the fact that I am happy with my Jeep but It seemed the OP was asking if people were happy with their new Jeeps

Go to your dealer and get the Uconnect update version 13.38.52 This will fix a lot of the problems. This month your dealer will be doing a recall for the brake module that will fix the rest of the problems. As far as the sound under the hood, take it to your dealer to find the fix. You saw the steering wheel when you bought it, so you can't complain about it now. Most people complaining here have not taken their jeeps in for the updates that will fix most problems. Search the forums here, they are a wealth of information.

Re: Hate my Summit. You?

I've taken the vehicle in for servicing 3 times in the 6 months I've had it to 2 different dealers. I get shrugs on most of the list. I'm going in again for the recall. Dealer can't either can't recreate issue(s) at the time or they have no idea of how to fix which is why I've taken it to different dealers for servicing.

Each time, I get my vehicle back with the same problems. I'm ready to drive it off a cliff at this point. I've specifically have asked for software updates EVERY time I service my vehicles dating back to December of 2011 when I got my last Cherokee. My previous Cherokee had some but not nearly this many issues. Frankly speaking, whenever I go to the dealer I get the feeling that I know more about the issues, trim levels, options and functionality than they do. Disheartening and the reason I'm here.

I am very well educated on the vehicle and it's functionality. And yes, to the guy thinly veiling sarcasm as advice I have indeed read the manual. -Thanks there Chief.

I chat with a buddy who has the V8 in a 2012 and he's getting considerably better mileage. I talk with my sister-in-law who has a 2014, works for Chrysler Digital and can't get anywhere.

I've read the forum and it simply seems to be filled with other posts discussing similar issues. Example Most Common 2014 Grand Cherokee Issues

Wow you have had some bad luck. My summit is about 6 months old and 7k miles and I love it! I worked through a few minor things but just about all is good now. Still waiting for the external temp sensor update to come out as there is a lag in the temp updates but other than that all is well. Here are a few suggestions below hope they help.
-Uconnect- if you have not updated your uconnect to version 13.38.52 do that right away that will probably knock out more than half your problems
-Mileage- with 5.7L I have been getting 18mpg mixed and as many as 25 mpg only highway on shell 87 octane. Normal driver not grandma and not running hard. If you are using premium try regular and use a name brand no minimart gas. Remember 87 has more energy in it than premium. Higher octane is only better if your car can make use of the extra octane. If you are towing 7200lbs up a mountain in death valley go with the 89 if you are just tooling around the suburbs 87 is fine and you may get better highway mileage out of it depending on your situation.
-Remote start ac issue- There is a firmware update for the remote start ac problem Have your dealer install TSB 24-002-13 that will fix it.
-just a suggestion but with all of those weird electrical gremlins you have going on you may try just pulling the battery cable and letting all the systems reset themselves. I often think of these new cars as computers when you have multiple programs crashing reboot the system.
-open your hood and check the fuse box and make sure all of the fuses are pressed in, more than half of mine were just barely sitting in the sockets.
Hope that helps some

I'd give anything to get my old Cherokee back. I'm still getting texts from the guy who bought it. Loves it. Perfect. Show room new. Zero issues. Jealous.

Re: Hate my Summit. You?

Yeah, that mileage blows.

And not to turn this into a "steering wheel" thread, but what made the last Jeep's steering wheel great? Didn't own a '11-13, but couldn't stand the steering wheel ( 6 oclock position plastics). Love my '14 Limited (all leather) steering wheel.

Good luck,
Al

Very helpful! It sounds like you have a dealer that might be better versed with our vehicle than mine is.

Are you confident with your dealer? If so, can you PM me the dealer name? I'm thinking it might be a good idea to give my dealer the name and number of another dealer that knows what they are doing to call for reference...

LOL no I don't have a good dealer I have never found the mythical good dealer, iam very down on dealers. They are very very rare but some have found the elusive good dealer. I only take my jeep to the dealer for warranty work because its required, the rest is done myself or private shop. Only thing I took my jeep back to the dealer for was a speaker they installed that was the wrong color and didn't match the others when they built it.

The Uconnect update you can do yourself, it is really not that hard all you need is a standard usb flash drive. go to this website and you can download it.
https://rsur.extra.chrysler.com/rsur/Uconnect.do

the ac update TSB you have to specifically tell them that the AC does not work with remote start and to apply that TSB for it. They wont just apply that one with normal scans.

let me know if you have other questions, the early 14s like ours did have a few things to work through but most you can get worked out and you will end up liking your jeep like I do I hope
