Hauling trailer

I've got the 360 hp hemi . . . Has anyone out there hauled a 7k trailer ? I traded my 6 litre Denali and am a little worried. Winter is not a good time to ask this, especially to you easterners, but here in Calif we play outside alot instead of sitting in the house playing checkers, waiting for the snow to go away.

Re: Hauling trailer

Do you have a weight distributing hitch? In my experience hauling similar weight with competitive platforms (Cayenne, Touareg) that can make all the difference. The biggest thing you will notice is the shorter wheelbase on the Overland making it feel less stable but the anti-sway electronics will take care of most of that.

I'll be hauling similar weight, a 16' enclosed motorcycle/ATV rig that can weigh anywhere from 3000 - 6000 lbs depending on what we are carrying and I've been hauling that around with the Touareg without a weight distributing hitch with no problems. I plan on investigating this hitch, it's expensive but gets rave reviews. http://www.hensleymfg.com/

There's also this thread on the Airstream forum, you might want to contact the guy there who says he's towed a larger trailer without a problem. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f238...yet-70028.html and http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...-tv-72923.html

Re: Hauling trailer

Sounds like a big toy, like 25' or more of a flyer of a boat? Let's see her?

As you know, the 5.7L is rated to haul 7.2k lbs+, but most will suggest optimal load is 15% below max ratings. I would think you would be fine for most coastal flat towing in SoCal, but if you hit elevation ups and downs it will be a bit much.

^Similar to mjw930, I towed 5500 lbs with a V6 Touareg previously, but that was just short hall flat towing. I'm looking forward to the WK2 5.7L, and expect to haul boats over 11k mountain passes with it no problem.

Photos please, it's snowing here and we won't launch until late May.

Inside playing checkers? Most of us "Northerns" enjoy playing outside in the winter, snowmobiling, skiing, ice fishing, hiking and many more things.

Same request to you, moose. What's in your armada? I have boated extensively on the Chesapeake Bay and on Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland but sold that boat with the place out there a few years ago. Getting the itch to get another boat now and living vicariously for the moment. It's been a while since I towed a boat but always enjoyed maneuvering a trailer around the docks. We had a tandem PWC trailer that was a lot of fun and looked good behind the Expedition. I would love to yank something around with the new Jeep but haven't had any opportunities yet.

Re: Hauling trailer

^Nek, we sometimes engage in winter sports here in CO as well. Gauntlet thrown, but that's OT and worthy of another thread.

CP, we grew up water and snow skiing at Deep Creek, the Youghiogheny, and Seven Springs! Good memories that we try to duplicate for our kids.

Here's a few samples of the summer toy, a 20' twin jet.

That's legit. Most people don't know how to pronounce, let alone spell, the "Yoc"! We had 9 great 4-season years at DCL before we sold it. I had Century and Cobalt bowriders while there. Good looking boat and nice shot of mini-moose the Rockbreaker!

I need to go for a drive now and think about boating, towing, golfing, beaching it, etc.

Re: Hauling trailer

According to my documentation from Jeep, regardless of weight the trailer frontal surface restriction is 64sqft. For highway hauling the trailer surface area drag Cd may be a bigger factor for wear & tear on the drivetrain than just the static trailer weight.

True but 64 sqft is the front of an 8' wide, 8' tall box trailer. I doubt many travel trailers in the under 7000 lb Gross Weight range are any larger. My 7x16 V-Nose has a frontal surface area of 42 sqft and it's in the shape of a V to ease it's flight through the air.

Now, if you are towing a smaller express cabin boat you might end up with a higher static surface area but the curved shape of the boat should mitigate some of that.
