Agree. Just saying, here in the land downunder, if we had mooses, we'd probably hit them, (just like kangaroos, emus, camels, cows etc etc etc) or true to form, we'd have so much camping and 4WD gear loaded inside and on the roof basket, that the test 'as is' lacks true downunder credibility.

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

At first I thought this was just another trumped up test but after reading more detail it seems to be valid. A bit extreme, perhaps, but valid nevertheless. Hope Chrysler engineers are having a closer look to see if the ESC needs to be tweaked again...

Mongoose9400 is an unknown quantity at this point
Unrepeatable test, not valid. Until they can reproduce the test and results each time it was a one time fluke with no roll.

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

Some dumb effing comments here....
I can believe you are all on edge here trying to defend what you drive. But know this folks... That magazine have tested thousands and thousands of cars.
The only similar incidents I can recall of was with the Merc A class and the Toyota Hilux.
This is not about avoiding a friggin moose.... It's an evasive manouver test... A common reacction when something suddenly appears on the road. That being a moose, koala, deer, racoon, car, bum or what ever...
Instead of blaiming the swedes... Thank Chrysler for their Italian partnership, which seems to be doing things in a very Italian way....
Wonder why this didn't happen with the WK1....

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

As far as I know the vehicle has Mercedes M-class bottom... so I wouldn't call this "Italian job"

Speaking as an engineer there's a lot of variables in the test procedure due to the fact that it is a human driver. Add in the lack of complete documentation (photos and weights of loads, steering angles, brake inputs, etc.) and there are a lot of questions that have not been answered. Because it happened once and can't be repeated points to a problem with the test procedure more than a problem with the vehicle itself.

To me this test is what I call and "indicator" test. It's sort of like when I test soil density across a large site; first I use a simple hand probe to locate soft spots, then I use a calibrated tool with an ASTM procedure to obtain an actual number that my peers would readily accept, because they would be able to duplicate it. The hand probe "indicates" a potential problem area, and the ASTM test documents it.

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

Well ok seems like a valid test. Good thing I never drive with that many people in the car. And I upgraded to the SRT8 wheels/tires so that should help too :-)

This is a very good point.

Edit: I'm guessing the full documentation can be found in the Sweedish Magazine. "The complete test where the Jeep Grand Cherokee fails the moose test is available in Teknikens Värld 15/2012 and could be ordered online."

Re: Have you seen this? Moose test

Their followup claims that when Jeep did the tests the car did not go on 2 wheels, but debeaded the tyres from the rims. I hope that Chrysler does more than just post a blog entry on this, as it is not a good look for them. The cause a heap of pain to Merc and Toyota when their vehicles failed this test.
They have more followups here:

OK, let's assume their test is valid.

Is this something that can be alleviated just by ESC program modification (similar to one done in 2011 after Consumer Reports test)? Or will it require some suspension re-engineering?
