I say put the TJ on a trailer behind the Trailhawk and take them both....

I think this is the best idea and it was exactly what I thought when I read your first post.

Re: Headed to CO, what Jeep to take?

I thought about towing with the hawk. My trailers weighs 2360#, The TJ is prob somewhere around 4500#. That doesn't leave much room for passengers and our belongings. I live in Chicago. So its about 19 hours. I think I'll be over the hawks GVWR by the time I get everything loaded up. I think its rated for 7400 or so. I also question if its wise to try and tow that much that far with the hawk?

If it was six hours away I'd prob suck it up and try it...I just have my doubts, and I am spoiled with having towed everything exclusively with diesel pickups for the last 12 years.

I am leaning towards taking the TJ. This last minute change of plans has led to some late nights in the garage making sure everything is ready to go!

Re: Headed to CO, what Jeep to take?

Your JGC limit is 7200 and your tongue weight also takes away from your cargo allowance which is already "constraining"...so I personally wouldn't want to do that long trip towing the TJ with the JGC with the family aboard. I'd do the truck/trailer/TJ or just the 'Hawk. But that's me...

Re: Headed to CO, what Jeep to take?

It sounds like OP has made up his mind to take the RAM and tow the TJ...

Lot's o' hand-wringin' and teeth nashin' on this dilemma. And when you over-think it, it can bog you down and cloud your brain. Personally, I'd just decide how much of my vacation was going to be devoted to trail riding. If that's high on the list the TJ would be a blast. But it adds complexity and cost to the trip... if your trip includes lots of "other" things to do, the GC is comfortable, fast, and will still get you over the trails. With a lot less cost and complexity.

OTOH - Having a built TJ and not using it out there seems like a waste... I see why you're torn.... Have a great trip!

Re: Headed to CO, what Jeep to take?

I'd just take the Trailhawk. Unless you want to rock crawl some crazy shit, you can still do many of the trails in Ouray / Telluride.

Mineral Basin is a 4/4 (low end difficulty / high end difficulty) out of 10. Ophir Pass is 2/3. Black Bear Pass is 4/5, and one of the most famous Jeep trails in the country (and I believe was done in a Subaru Outback). Imogene Pass and Governor Basin are both 4/5. Yankee Boy Basin is 2/3.

I've only done a very easy trail in that area, called Last Dollar Road (2/2) and it was a breeze. Not even a single area that was sketchy. I've done other trails in the 3/4 range, with my stock 2012 Altitude. No skid plates, no ELSD, the only "mod" being Nitto Terra Grapplers on 20" wheels.

Re: Headed to CO, what Jeep to take?

Well, we took the TJ and had a blast! There was a few times(like last dollar road) where the hawk would have been more comfortable. The hawk wouldn't offer the same experience though. Cramming my family in the TJ, ditching the top and doors and heading out was a blast. We had amazing weather. So far we've run ...
Imogene, black bear, engineer, cinnamon, Yankee boy, Ophir, red mountain, American basin, mineral creek. Was thinking of hitting Poughkeepsie today but the storms have me questioning that idea.

I'll post a few pics when the wifi speed isn't so slow.

Here is my EVIC from the return trip. I left at 4am Tues, and was home Weds. at 2am. Not bad considering we only stopped for fuel, bathroom breaks, and one quick lunch.

I estimate I was north of 16,000lbs towing the TJ, all our gear, tools, 2 adults, 2 kids. Set the cruise at 80 the entire way, except for in the mountains, which as you know is really slow going at times (amazing that those few hundred miles of slowish mountain roads dropped my average speed that much!)

Pretty happy with the fuel consumption and time especially, considering I had my 6 and 7 year old boys in the back seat
