Headed to Moab - Need input!

I am going to Moab/Arches in 2 weeks. Does anyone have any recommended trails with rewarding endings I can take my Overland on without my wife freaking out in the passenger seat?

Re: Headed to Moab - Need input!

That area is loaded with fantastic landscapes!

I liked the drive and views into Canyonlands south to Dead Horse Point, and the other overlooks along that Highway 313, west of Moab. Not difficult at all, as it is a Utah highway.

Chicken Corners Trail - I did it several years ago in my Toyota Tundra with my wife and kids - not too bad and we had a blast. Also, go to Dead Horse Point and there are some easy trails out there along with Canyonlands NP.

Re: Headed to Moab - Need input!

I've been to Moab 3 times in my built JK. Get the Moab trail book (spiral wound one) by Charles Wells. It has most of the better known ones. They are listed by area, difficulty and alphabetically. Best $25 spent if its your first trip. Definatly spend a day at Arches Park and Island in the Sky. If you have time go south to the Needles part of Canyonlands also. I always joke with my wife that I'll take her Overland on Hells Revenge. I know it will do most of it but it was the only trail she cried on after 7 days at EJS 2011. Have fun theres lots of sand and the slickrock is like driving on sandpaper, almost any tire will have traction. Just watch your sidewalls if you're running stock tires as they're week. It will be hot down there so always bring lots of water.

Yes it does, theres a tip toe thru version of that trail. I put 275/55/20 silent armors on my wifes Overland. Havn't tried them yet though. We did Soldiers Pass and Broken Arrow at Sedona with it this spring. It worked well, got some wierd looks from the pink Jeep crowd having this brand new Jeep car up on the rocks. I'll have to figure out how to post some pics on this site. Do you have the E locker?

Re: Headed to Moab - Need input!

I just did Fins and Things earlier this year with my WK2. Doing it again, I would have aired down (and preferably had some MTs on there instead of silent armors)

Re: Headed to Moab - Need input!

We ran alot of trails there with just BFG ATs 305/65/18" the first couple of times down there with the JK. You won't be doing anything serious enough with a GC that you need MTs. Its like driving on sandpaoper. If you're doing Pritchett Canyon or Golden Spike or Behind the Rocks but I'm not seeing a new GC doing any of that.

How much time do you want to spend driving? I've been there a few times and also just got back with the WK2, so I can also add info. Are you looking for rock crawling or general off roading with great views?

The Sands Flats Rec Area has all the rock crawling (Fins, Hells Revenge, etc). Off road trails can be found everywhere else.

You can also drive out to Whale Eye Arch and beyond from Arches National park. Easy for your WK2.
