HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

I have a 7200# trailer that I plan on towing. Dealer said I could add tow pack after the fact but the Class IV tow pack looks more extensive

I have a 2012 Laredo with the 5.7 hemi. I am having the tow hitch installed from the dealer tomorrow and I am buying a brake controller.

My question is, will it pull? and will it over heat?

I checked and looks like I have three coolers (radiator, trans and a/c) up front. The biggest thing I saw was a different fan and alt, which I assume are easy to swap. But I could be way wrong, I am used to wrenching on much older cars so I could be way off base.

Any help?

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

If you do not have factory tow, your towing capability will be derated. You need factory tow to get that 7200 lb rating. It's not just about the hitch, but all the other additions and changes that come with the factory towing option including cooling enhancements, heavy duty brakes, anti-sway and other suspension improvements, etc. To try and add all those things, even if it was possible, would be very expensive as compared to what the package costs at time of manufacture.

Even with factory tow, you still need that brake controller as well as a weight distribution hitch to handle that kind of load...

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

so damn confusing. The dealer said I could tow it just fine. The website says the 5.7L can tow it just fine. the class iv tow group just looks like upgraded fan, load level shocks (really needed?) and 220A alt.

When I bought it, i was told I could add it after no problem, because they didn't have one with the tow pack and the other stuff I wanted.

if you are 100% sure I guess I will cancel my hitch install and trade in for something else.

The other confusing part is I have a base Laredo with the 5.7 Hemi, but it says that it wasn't an option.

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

"Base" Laredo is pretty, um..."base". It was really intended as a fleet vehicle in the current model years. The next step up (Laredo E) is pretty much where most non-fleet folks start if they want a more economical to buy JGC. That said, in MY12, the Laredo E "was" the base, according to wk2jeeps.com and it didn't offer the Hemi as an option. The Laredo X was the first trim level that offered the Hemi.

For MY12, the maximum towing capacity without factory towing is 5000 lbs...it's in the MY12 specifications.

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

NM, i see it now:

  • All models can tow trailers up to 5,000 pounds with the addition of a trailer hitch. For towing heavier trailers up to the Maximum Trailer Weight Ratings shown in the Trailer Towing chart, the vehicle must be equipped with the Trailer Tow Group Class IV for the 5.7-liter engines for North America.

That is probably why they said you could add it. To make a sale. I was told the same thing when I was buying. Once I put it all on paper (larger radiator, big brakes, alternator, etc) and asked them to initial that they would install all these things for the agreed upon price, the truth came out.

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

Trailer Tow Group IV (V-8 only) —
Includes heavy-duty engine
cooling, engine oil cooler, 220-amp alternator, rear load-leveling
suspension (not available with Quadra-Lift air suspension
system), full-size spare tire, steel spare wheel, Class IV receiver
hitch with seven- and four-pin wiring harness

Get the hitch installed and don't worry about it. There's nothing in the options that are really necessary except the hitch and wiring harness which is what you are getting. A different fan, don't think thats gonna matter. The rest of the stuff is just extra junk that isn't needed.

Will it pull? yes
Will it overhead? no unless you are in a trailer race at the local track.

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

Are you sure the tow package includes different brakes? The tongue weight on a 7,200 lb trailer will put you up close to the gross vehicle weight rating so you won't have much capacity left for passengers or cargo in the Jeep.

HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

Yes tow package includes HD brakes. Vehicles equipped from factory with the tow package do not have option to use 17" wheels due to the larger brakes

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

You will also need a WD hitch. In the end, your vehicle is neither rated, nor equipped to tow that much.

Re: HEAVY Towing w/o Class IV tow pack

I thought all the V-8s came with HD brakes regardless of any other package?

Im sure if you went the numbers on the GVW and axle and tire loads it still works out. Might need a WD to take some load off the rear axle. The one thing you will not be able to get around is Jeeps stated tow rating. Which is an interesting discussion because with all the things that can be done aftermarket to trucks, can you increase your tow rating, or at least make an arguement for being over it?
