Help! FOB died??

Hi everyone, I'm out of town and my FOB stopped working. GC is only 2 weeks old and no remote functions work. I had to use the hidden key to get in, which sets off the alarm. I could not find any info on re-pairing the FOB with the Jeep. Hard to believe the battery is dead already, but remote start didnt work from about 50 feet earlier today, so maybe???

Anyone else have these issues? I will search, but was hoping someone had some ideas before I wake up the whole hotel at 6am tomorrow.

Thx
Ryan

Re: Help! FOB died??

You will probably have to change the battery in the Fob. I had it in my pocket before where the button was pushed for a long time and it caused the Fob battery to go dead. Then after a few hours it started working again but I still had to change the battery because it was really weak. Hope this helps.

Re: Help! FOB died??

Take the actual key out of your fob and use that to get into the vehicle. When you're in the car, pull out the push to start button and you will see an indent that is fit for the tip of your fob. Stick the fob in the notch and turn it to the right as if you were starting a car with a regular key. It should start right up no problem. The battery in the fob is a cr2032, you can get one at radioshack or best buy pretty cheap. There must have been an old battery in your fob, they never die or lose range that quickly. Good luck

Good tip.

1. Is it tough to remove the pushbutton? With its rounded edges and semi-recessed placement it doesn't look like it gives you any way to grab and tug it out.

2. My dealer said that some owners just can't seem to get on board with the keyless-go lifestyle and ask to have the button removed permanently so that they can use their fobs as a traditional insert-and-twist key.

It pops out pretty easily...no tugging required.

Re: Help! FOB died??

Either way push button Fob or turnkey the Fob must be powered to send a signal to the vehicle computer for the vehicle to start. I'm pretty sure that it’s different then the old sentry key chip. More than likely as mentioned in my last post the battery was discharged as opposed to a half-dead battery being put in the key Fob as those batteries will hold their charge for years unless being used.

Re: Help! FOB died??

Update:

I got home from the trip today and grabbed my second key and it seems to work ok. I'm hoping it's just a battery in the FOB, but I got a little nervous searching the forums and hearing about people with TSBs / Etc where modules that control the Keyless Enter N' Go needed to be replaced.

I will replace the battery in FOB #1 and keep an eye on it. It really is a PITA because the alarm goes off every time you unlock and enter the Jeep until the you start it.

Re: Help! FOB died??

So you're saying Rybocf....Once you entered the vehicle and started the vehicle with the tip start key it stayed running? If thats the case its good to know that the Fob will still start the engine without having power to it and it is like the old sentry key system. Unless the only problem is with the unlock button on the Fob? Do all of the other buttons work on the Fob?

Re: Help! FOB died??

My FOB battery went out on my 2005 JGC and before I could replace the battery I figured out if you locked the vehicle with the inside powered lock switch and used the key to unlock later the alarm went off. But if you locked it from outside using the key you could unlock without setting off the alarm. So I'd use power lock switch all then open driver's door then use key from outside to lock driver's door. If you have driver's door open and use power lock switch to lock then close door and later unlock using key....the alarm goes off until you start the vehicle ..... embarrassing and rude.

Re: Help! FOB died??

I got in mine this morning and it said " no key present" (while the key was in my pocket) I hit the unlock on the fob while sitting in the vehicle and the lights flashed but the dash still said no key present. I hit the brake and the start push button and the vehicle started (I don't always believe what I read)...no problems since.

I'm at 1300+ miles.

I missed this earlier, sorry.

Yes, the FOB will start the Jeep even if completely dead. I definitely tested this theory This should alleviate some fears from some other threads I have been reading about the potential for being stranded with a dead FOB.

I replaced the battery in FOB #1 and everything seems to be back to normal. Still not sure how it died, key was used less than 2 weeks, but now I know how to work around it.

I also now know to lock the door with the embedded key next time so it doesn't trigger the alarm when I have to unlock.
