Help me to not hate driving my WK2

I lurked here for a while before buying a WK2 for our family vehicle. I serioulsy considered a JKU, mainly becasue my wife and I prefer manual transmissions. But we decided to go the more "practical" route and got a '11 WK2 Laredo X 22k miles with a 3.6.

And now I'm really regretting this decsision. We live in hilly country, and our most common drive is a 60mph highway trip on two-lane hilly pavement. I can't stand how it has to shift to 4th everytime it sees a hill, and on the bigger ones drop to 3rd! I think part of the problem is how erratic the cruise control is....it varies 7 mph. And it tends to slow down going down hill, and then try to speed up again at the base of the hill, forcing it to shift. Is everybody's cruise control this crazy?! I've never owned a vehicle with such a crappy cruise. It also kills the mileage.
And the autostick is worthless. If it would keep it from downshifting even into 3rd it would help, but it seems to only limit upshifts, not downshifts. I won't buy another vehicle without test driving it in the hills.

I had a XJ with 4.88s and 35's that I put a shift controller on, but I don't suppose this trans is as simple.

Any ideas, especially with the cruise? I cant tell you how much i wish they offered a 6 speed in a wk2!!!

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

You bought an older (MY11) JGC that has the older 5 speed transmission. Current versions have an 8 speed transmission and it makes a huge difference with the V6, as well as the V8 and EcoDiesel.

Perhaps there is a difference in the cruise control on your Laredo X, but the ACC cruise on my MY12 is rock steady, including up and down most hills. But I also have the V8 and a "6 speed"...which is essentially the same transmission as the 5-speed in the MY11, but with some different ratio going up than coming down.

The bottom line is that the improvements you seek actually have been implemented in the line since the MY11 debuted this platform, specifically in MY14 and later.

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

I searched around and found one or two other people commenting on the cruise varying speed, but not as much as mine is.

I'm not suprised a v-8 would be better. maybe should have went that route.

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

I had an '11 V6, and then traded for a '14 V6 Durango. There is a night and day difference with the 8 spd. and lower gears. I still didn't mind driving my '11. I thought it was a great highway cruiser. I just hated driving it to the service center.

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

I've learned the hard way... get what you really want and avoid the regrets down the road.

FWIW I have the 3.6 and 8 spd in a 2015 and it's done well out here in Colorado.

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

There are " TRANSMISSION SHIFT ENHANCEMENTS PROCEDURES" available at your dealer in the TSBs. Check out the tsb section at wk2jeeps.com

There are updates for that truck.

I have the 6 speed trans in my truck and it's not bad. Its doesn't shift as often or as smooth as the 8 speed but it's decent.

Get it looked at.
I took mine in over and over only to be told its normal.

After a my last update it finally runs well.

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

2zero makes a good point...since you bought an older used vehicle, be sure that you check what TSBs are available for it that may apply to situations you describe. There most certainly have been transmission behavior enhancements. Remember, all of that is computer controlled...

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

It's a pretty well known fact that the 5 speed sucks. The 8 speed is better, but with 32" and a 2.5" lift (2014), my cruise varies 3-4mph, it's literally the only thing I hate about the vehicle. It drives me nuts...so most of the time, I just don't use it.

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

I have a 2011 Overland. I am going to check the TSB status because my cruise varies about 3 mph and it drives me nuts. But I love everything else about this thing... it handles well, I like the ergonomics, nice interior, etc...

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

the cruise control is more advanced than any other it applies the brakes or downshifts to keep the set speed others DO NOT do this. my cruise could not be anymore accurate in the v8. the problem isnt with the car, its not called automatic for no reason. i know which i would much prefer and it isnt an old stick shift..get over it let it do its job sit back and relax a little, heck even hold your mrs hand instead of having to grab the shifter lol

Re: Help me to not hate driving my WK2

I have a 2014 V6 with 8 speed and it will downshift on hills but the shifts at speed are smooth as silk... Speed control is +- 2MPH.

I have noticed a rough 1-2 shift on cold mornings (first shift only) but that is a different topic.
