Help - placing in Neutral to be towed

Hi there,
Quick question, is there an easy/quick way to turn off the engine and have my GC in Neutral, can that be done ?

I read the manual and I guess there is a way but it was like 20 steps and ended up confused, there has to be an easier way to be in N and car turned off.

Any help will be appreciated.
Rgds

Re: Help - placing in Neutral to be towed

In the bottom of the center console bin, there's a pull strap that I believe disengages the drivetrain for emergencies. You should also look in the manual for instructions to configure for flat towing.

Hi Jim,
Thanks, wasnt aware of the pull strap, I'll look into that.
I was looking in the manual, but ended up confused thats why I decided to ask here.
Basically the thing is..I'm going on a 4x4 trip, and for what I heard there are river crosssing with the water a little bit too high, and since I dont want to attach a snorkel an option that came in conversations was to put my GC in N, and tow it thru the river, in papers it sounds simple, that is until I realize it isnt as easy as I thought to engage N and then turn off the engine.
Oh well, I'll try to find the strap you mention, I recall reading about it somewhere, its just something I want to know if needed, maybe the water is not that high when we get there, but the other 7 trucks have snorkels so the easiest way was to have them tow me if needed.
Trip is in October, upon return (if I return..), I'll share the pics/videos.
Thanks, regards

Lift up the center counsel and pull off the plastic cover that cover the back hinges of the cover. It's right there.

Re: Help - placing in Neutral to be towed

What about that little push switch by the Selec Terrain knob. That reads neutral and i think it is the electronic version of the cable activated mechanism in the center console. Would need to be pushed with a key or pencil...

Yea, that's what I was eluding to in my previous comment, but I wasn't clear, unfortunately. There's a specific "dance" you do to use that little button to put the drive train into neutral...somewhere in the manual. LOL

Lol, isn't this the button that was recalled in previous models due to car rolling due to electronic failure

I believe that the little button disengages the drivetrain so there would be no binding when towing. For example I see many Grand Cherokees towed behind motorhomes. Perhaps one of those owners can comment.

Re: Help - placing in Neutral to be towed

From MY2012 manual

NEUTRAL Shift Procedure
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, engine off.
2. Vehicle stopped, with foot on brake.
3. Place the transmission into NEUTRAL.
4. Hold down the NEUTRAL “pin” switch (with a pen,
etc.) for four seconds until the LED light by the switch
starts to blink indicating shift in progress. The light will
stop blinking (stay on solid) when the NEUTRAL shift is
complete.
5. Repeat Steps 1 to 4 to shift out of NEUTRAL.

Re: Help - placing in Neutral to be towed

In case you weren't aware, that pin switch is actually putting the 4x4 transfer case into neutral, not the transmission...no different than putting the manual shifter on a Wrangler in neutral on the way to 4-low. But that should work just fine for your towed river crossing (make sure the steering wheel isn't locked when you shut it off, before they start towing you across).
