Help with a question about ACC

For the first time today, my ACC braked my 2013 JGC when a car jumped in front of me. I had it set with 2 'bars' showing. Startled me because it was the first time. I mean it really braked.

I was in the left lane on I75 doing about 65 mph. My question is, do the brake lights come on when this happens.

Dan

Re: Help with a question about ACC

For liability reasons I would think the brake lights would have to come on as a warning to traffic behind you.

The Owners Manual claims it does:

"NOTE: The brake lights will illuminate whenever the
ACC system applies the brakes."

Lacking that, you'd have to have someone follow you or kludge up a mirror to see your brake lights, or drive after dark where you could see the brake lights coming on as they reflect off items around the road.

Re: Help with a question about ACC

ACC effectively uses the same system to brake the vehicle as you do, so just like when you press the brake peddle, the lights come on. It would be quite unsafe otherwise...

Help with a question about ACC

I've only had it apply the brakes once. I was going down a highway about 55mph and a school bus was turning off the road, I was completely fine/not going to hit it. It slammed the brakes. I was cruising with my left hand at 12 on the steering wheel, the other hand somewhere around the gearshift. Well when it slammed the brakes, my right hand bumped the gearshift and I put it neutral. I was freaking out!!!

I must say, that sure would be interesting to see a car braking without its brake lights on. Yes, your brake lights go on

Also, you will learn when to deactivate ACC on your own so you dont get into situations where the vehicle might brake excessively on its own. For example, if someone merges into your lane and is relatively close I will always cancel ACC on my own because you can anticipate that its gonna hit the brake fairly heavily yo achieve the desired spacing requirements.
The other time that I find myself having to cancel ACC is this situation. Say you are driving on a straight one lane road and adaptive cruise is activated and maintaining space between you and the car ahead. The car ahead will be turning right and there is a turn lane. ACC will kind of follow that vehicle even as it is merged into the turn lane and will slow your vehicle even though there isnt technically a car ahead of you. So if there is a car behind you they will be like WTF is this guy braking for. So I always cancel it before this happens. Other than that, the system works very well and I love how it will completely stop me on my new 2014. Obviously my previous 2012 Overland would not do that.
