hemi difference?

New to the site and have enjoyed it. Just bought the wife a 14 overland with 5.7 hemi and was wondering what is the difference between the hemi I have and the one put in the ram 1500? Jeep rated at 360 hp, and the ram is rated 390 hp. Im sure its been discussed ,but like I said, new to the site, thanks!

Re: hemi difference?

Wow, not one answer? I also noticed the charger and challenger hemi has 375 hp. Still wondering why so much differences in the same motor?

Re: hemi difference?

They're probably trying to squeeze extra mpg's out of the jeep version.

Re: hemi difference?

The difference is due to intake design differences for under hood packaging reasons.

Re: hemi difference?

'Red is correct...same underlying engine, but the setups are different for each vehicle.

Re: hemi difference?

I'd guess they have different shift points, I'd guess they are tuned a little differently.

Re: hemi difference?

I know for the earlier Hemi versions, in the WKs, the exhaust manifolds (and consequently perhaps the entire exhaust system) were different. The WKs had smaller manifolds than Ram/Charger/etc. that had more ponies. This was supposedly due to varying space restrictions on the various models.

I am assuming that is at least part of the issue with our WK2s too.

Re: hemi difference?

Ram's target is totally different from JGC.

JGC Hemi is more like the Hemi for everybody.

Ram is more targeted.

Gonna go out on a limb and say your wife may not like the Hemi in the Ram if she were to take a test drive(due to shift points and such). Ram is a great truck but the motor is more purpose designed.

I wish my Hemi had 390hp, but I also like the better MPGs in my Limited.

I just took a 400 mile road trip and only needed the full performance of 360 hp out a handful of times. The rest of the time I drove it like a 6 cyl.

Re: hemi difference?

I preferred the 5.7 in my 2010 Ram 1500 Laramie crew cab 2WD. 390 hp/407 tq, but it had 3.92 gears with a limited slip and it hauled ass off the line unlike the WK and WK2 I've had (both with the 5.7 as well). As stated in this thread the HP/TQ difference is mainly from the intake and exhaust manifold design - there is much more room under the hood of the Ram, obviously.

The shift points really weren't different from the WK or WK2 and I got about the same MPG as both the WK and WK2 (19-20 on the highway, 14-15 for "in-town" driving).

I test drove a 2014 Ram 1500 Sport crew cab 4x4 with the 8 speed before I bought my Jeep and it was even better than my 2010. The 8 speed is butter. Would have bought it instead but they didn't have a truck with the color combo or options I wanted on the lot and they gave me a stellar deal on my WK2.
