Highest Oil Temp You Have Experienced ?

What is the highest oil temperature you've noticed on your Grand Cherokee? Be sure to give the type of engine you have with the temp. Mine with the 5.7 HEMI has been 215F. But the car has less than 100 miles on it, and it's not been run for long periods at high speeds.

This is the first car I've had that has factory oil and trans temp gauges. I like monitoring this stuff. I think having an oil temp gauge is really nice, because it's good to get your oil over 212F once in a while, to get rid of any moisture. With the oil temp gauge, you'll know when you've reached it.

It's also nice for towing. You can keep a close on the trans temp pulling up a long hill.

Greetings,

What type of oil are you running with? Full Synthetic or the blend?

Best for now.

Greetings,

Interesting, I am running on full synthetic now. I am going to look at the oil temp on my next outings.

Thanx.

Best for now.

240 degrees F towing a trailer up and down the Rocky Mountains when it was 105 degrees on the West end. I always slowed down when approaching that temp and never let it stay there more than a few minutes. That's the highest but the average is more like 200.

2014 JGC Limited with 3.6L 6 cyl. Pentastar.

Re: Highest Oil Temp You Have Experienced ?

215-222F in slow moving traffic with A/C off (no fan running) is pretty common. I've had mine hit 230F pretty consistently if I'm getting on it pretty good (lots of hard acceleration). 5.7L.

Highway cruise in hot weather is typically 212-217F, or 208-210F in colder weather.

Re: Highest Oil Temp You Have Experienced ?

Mine stays between 215-220 normally and when I was towing a couple weeks ago thru mountains I hit 235 and it freaked me out so I slowed down and let it cool off for a few mins. I run full synthetic and read that it is completely safe to be that high if on synthetic. Who knows. Can't believe everything on the Internet.

Highest Oil Temp You Have Experienced ?

235-240F is fine for a full synthetic motor oil. In all honesty, it's usually fine for a non-synthetic as well if it's not sustained for hours or days on end.

Generally I wouldn't even begin to think about oil temperature until I started seeing sustained temps above 250-260F. It doesn't break down that fast -- much higher temps accelerate the process requiring a sooner oil change but it isn't like your oil turns instantly broken down with higher temps.

Now, if you're approaching 325F then it's going to break down pretty quickly. Not instantly, but pretty quick.

Re: Highest Oil Temp You Have Experienced ?

I've never seen over 195F oil temp with a '12 Pentastar. This includes pulling a 4,000 lb travel trailer at 65 mph on a 90+ Florida summer day. Just whatever dino oil the dealer puts in.
