Re: Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier

I had (actually still have, but don't keep it at my house anymore) one that a buddy made for me. It was way bigger than the ones you see pre-made and was made from some heavy steel. I used it with my Bronco (class IV frame mounted hitch) and put a BUNCH of weight on that sucker many times. Then with my Pathfinder - rated for 600lbs tongue weight, I used it to haul a cooler and 6 five gallon gas cans back and forth to the lake for years.

The thing worked great, but I'd guess it was around 100lbs. It was just a pain to store because it was so heavy and awkward that it really was borderline too much for me to mess with by myself.

I later bought a small enclosed trailer and an open utility trailer, and really wasn't using the rack any more, so it's stored away from my house.

I think I will pick up one of the Harbor Freight aluminum ones though. I bought one years ago and bolted to in-front of the box on my enclosed trailer to carry a small generator and it seems to be of decent quality and is light. It seems like something that would be good to throw a cooler on and take duck hunting to keep some mess outside of the new truck. My Pathfinder is 'used' enough that I haven't really minded to make a mess in it the past few years.

Re: Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier

I got the steel carrier from Harbor Freight for $39.99 on Black Friday. The cargo bag is from Rola. Both performed flawlessly on our annual Christmas trip to NY.

Re: Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier

I've got a HD hitch rack I got a few years ago that has a 2" ball on the back that's rated for a light trailer.

I've towed a PWC hooked up to the rack on multiple occasions with zero problems. I'll have to try and find a pic of the setup, it's pretty unique and always gets questions at the ramp.

Re: Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier

Aluminum carrier. Note exhaust deflector. Would be easy to add metal corner braces but doubt are needed.
