I find it very odd that it rolled. do you not find it odd for a BRAND NEW CAR to roll from park when it clearly was placed in park? We get it, you want everyone to change and use it. that's fine, but don't troll the forums to get your point across. stop using the same old and tiring argument. you sound like a surgeon generals warning on cigarette cartons. Its advertised all the time that smoking causes cancer and its written on the package. but despite this, millions still smoke. You cannot force people to put on the brake because its not safe. people need to find out on their own. you made your point multiple times, just stop it and move on
It's disappointing that a JGC cannot reliably be put in park. This isn't the first example of this problem.

Hopefully, JGC owners will at least use the parking brake otherwise people may get killed or injured. The JGC is not a light vehicle and your suggestion that "people find out on their own" is dangerous.

And why are you bringing up old posts? And no where in my posts have I ever said not to use the parking brake. I see you have not qouted me saying that I think its a good idea to use it. You will not succeed in reigniting an argument.

How would you do that in a car with no dipstick.

The penalty is less than that for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. In some states (Mass. being one), parking violations do not even rise to the level of a civil infraction.
It's not just the fine you have to worry about. If you car rolls back and injures someone, there is the civil liability.

That's like apologizing for driving past the local bar where a bunch of mouthy drunken yahoos are driving the bartender to distraction.

What did the dealer come back with? Is the park position indicator busted, or is the transmission faulty? Either one of these could trigger a safety recall for Jeep if reported.

And given the keyless ignition systems, so you don't have the fed mandated key/park/transmission interlock, it probably should.

In Colorado, if your parking brake is not on as you and a testing officer enter your vehicle, that officer may fail your test. Similarly, failing to set it after the test may result in a failure.

California also specifies the use of the parking brake.

I don't recall any state that does NOT require it in the many I've lived in.... there may be some that have no hills?

Never happened to me, although the only times I've tried it is when doing UConnect updates.

Why do you ask?

Re: Holy smacks! My JGC just moved itself out of the driveway

There's allegedly a small 5mm allen screw on the transmission that can be tightened to dis-engage the parking pawl inside the ZF 8 speed. This is for a BMW, which may not be the exact design transmission used in the GC, even though it is the same series.

If that were there, and too tight, the pawl might not engage properly.

The GC has a release in the center console, unfortunately not able to find any details on how that ties mechanically down to the 8 speed, so couldn't offer an informed
WAG on whether ice and cruft could help it release the pawl.

The pawl on the 8 speed is pretty robust--you can't shove the vehicle with it in park IF it is actually engaged--which may be part of the base question here as opposed to just turning on the indicator. The pawl also seems not to be affected by below zero temps IF operating properly.

Although I usually apply the parking brake, it was unsettling knowing this could happen.
Hmmm, google or similar for ZF 8 speed parking pawl problems.
Seems there may be an issue in more than just Mopars.

I'd ask the dealer to open a star case with Chrysler...
