Whoopee do. You aren't the only drag racer in the world.

Well I know how a clutch posi (like GM Positraction) works, I know how a locker works (Detroit), I even know better than to weld up spiders unless on dirt. But I really do not know how or when an electronic LSD works particularly with the engine off.

Works like an open diff.

Well the reason I said to jack up the rear and spin a tire with someone holding the other is this. If its an open diff, you will be able to spin a tire with someone holding the other. Open diffs work by sending power to the path of least resistance and is why thats possible. An lsd is different. It works much like an open diff under normal conditions. When one wheel loses traction power goes to the wheel that has traction. If you jack up the rear of a car and try to spin the wheel with someone holding the other you wont be able to. That is why when I talked about putting the park pawl in the rear end it would essentially lock the whole rear. But because all you wanna do is start arguments without a basic understanding of mechanics, and just because you keep bringing up old posts and twisting what was said. Just to start crap.

Well sorta. In park if you spin one wheel with an open diff, the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction. With an LSD, everything will try to turn in the same direction. With a locker it requires no jacking since it will go eep, eep, eep around a tight corner.

Re: Holy smacks! My JGC just moved itself out of the driveway

If in Park and the other wheel is being held, neither will turn, open or LSD. Person doing the holding will feel it try though. Think to do what you say, the trans needs to be in neutral, then if one wheel in an open diff is held the driveshaft will spin as you turn the other.

Is an old way to tell the gear ratio in the diff. Hold one, turn the other one rev exactly and count the number of revs of the driveshaft then divide by 2. Can get close enough for government work.

Fun but nothing to do with the FMVSS though.

Don't know where you get the divide by 2 part. If the wheel is turned once and the DS turns just over 4 times, it's probably a 4.10 or 4.11, if it turns just under 4 times, probably a 3.90, etc. This is how we did it in the old days.

"Don't know where you get the divide by 2 part" from holding the other wheel stationary. If both turn together then is not needed.

Have to pull the cover and refill after to count teeth (and must be careful to count the hypoid pinion properly, points on end is easiest.)

Im not agreeing on the devide by 2. I was referring to count the rotation of wheel and drjve shaft as an approximate
