It is. I worked with a guy for years who was one of these types who always drove around on a near empty tank. He never filled up. Always $10 bucks worth or less. He was constantly putting in fuel pumps. (Ford V-10 Excursion, of all vehicles). He got gas almost daily.

Finally, after this happened 3 or 4 times, the mechanic asked him how often he fills the tank. He told him never. He then told him to start, and explained why. He never put in another fuel pump again. Fuel pumps will run far cooler if they're submerged in fuel. Yeah, they're designed to work regardless of the fuel level. But the fact is if you're one of these, "$10 dollar guy's", you're better off bouncing the needle from, 3/4 to "FULL", than from, 1/4 to "EMPTY". I won't even get into condensation if you live in high humidity.

I never let it go below 1/4.

That's good for daily driving, but on a 2000 mile trip, let's say running until the low fuel light comes on gives you 500 miles. Running to 1/4 tank gives you 400 miles.

If I stop every quarter tank, it means 1-2 extra fuel stops.

That rare time now and then running down to only a few gallons left will not hurt your vehicle.

I try to normally fuel up at no less than 1/4 tank simply because if I get trapped on a road due to major accident or blizzard conditions, I might be trapped for a couple days. I don't want to run out of gas while trying to keep myself from freezing.

Wait until you get a little older. You will be making more frequent stops and it will have nothing to do with the fuel gauge.

Re: How big is a WK2 gas tank?

We live 25 miles from the closest hospital so I fill at 1/4 tank so I can always drive at least that far and back to the hospital in the middle of the night. My elderly parents live next door and past experience has taught me how scary it can be to run on fumes to the emergency room.

Yeah, you'll be stopping because you're full, not because your Jeep is empty.

Re: How big is a WK2 gas tank?

Checking Fuelly, I have bought over 22 gallons 5 times since I bought the Jeep. The most = 22.95 gallons last April 16!

Why not? Like I said I fill up at earliest convenience once the low fuel light comes on. Why would I wanna make extra trips to the gas station before it needs gas?

I mean it's your vehicle and your money but I don't see the sense in letting it get that low.

I agree. A mostly empty tank is going to contain more air. Temperature changes are more likely to produce a condensate. Not so much an issue in dry climates. If I were in a humid environment or drove fewer miles I would tank up more often. As it is I am tanking up fairly often due to a lengthy commute. Tanking up at 1/2 tank would be too often for my schedule.

It has a low fuel light? When is it supposed to come on?
