Good to hear others in the same boat. I will most likely end up using the Jeep for winter duty, and my Bimmer for the few nice months we get. The Jeep is definitely safer, one of the reasons I bought her. And they are absolute beasts on the snow and ice. The main reason I fell in love with GCs.

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

There are three reasons all those miles are bad:
1) cost of gas and maintenance
2) Consuming lots of oil: negative impact on environment and more money sent overseas to bad people
3) loss of time/quality of life. You cold be spending those two hours with family and friends instead of driving.

The only good answer is to move closer to work and then enjoy your gas guzzling Jeep. You, your family and the planet are better off with you living 5 or 10 miles from work with a jeep than living 40 miles away with a priuis. If you can't do that, you bought the wrong vehicle.

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

While I don't disagree with you Pixie, naturally there are circumstances and variables that factor in heavily. Eventually I will not have to commute as far, but in the mean time and as we say in the Army, it is what it is.

I say get your money out of her and drive it.
Lets hope the Pentastar turns out to be nothing short of bulletproof. I do agree though, factor in modern fluids, parts and engineering, extremely anal maintenance, and the warranty and 200k should be cake. And of course, exterior and interior degradation will never happen on my watch!

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

My commute is 17 miles round trip. I normally drive my WK2 about 2-3 times a week. The Hemi is gas consuming, and wear and tear. Even though my commute is small, I still prefer not to drive it as often. I drive my wifes car, which is a Dodge Stratus to save on gas and wear and tear. When inclimate weather occurs, I always take the Jeep, because I don't know if trees are gonna be knocked on the ground. I am looking forward to the snow. I definitely like the drive better in my WK2, but I hate putting gas in it. But that is normally my biggest decision of the day, which vehicle to drive.

Even so, every now and then I have to drive the Jeep to work. With a Montana winter coming I still don't want to drive my WK2 to work, but in reality the cost of winterizing both vehicles is off-putting, to say the least. Plus, the Jeep was simply built for harsh winter.

To add, I can't stomach the thought of finally paying off my Jeep only to have 75 - 100k on the clock (it would be more if I let my wife drive her).

So, for those of you who DD their WK2, what words of encouragement or advice can you give (apart from work closer to home!). How do I not be a mileage nazi!
I know what you are going through. I couldn't really get over the fact of having over 100K on my truck when it gets paid off myself. Right now I only use my truck for the snow or if I have to haul a lot of things (or people). But 80 miles per day isn't all that bad, your Jeep shouldn't be to bad at the end of you paying it off.

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

My jeep is my DD and i also drive 80 miles round trip each day. We also have an extra commute car, a 2003 hyundai elantra that my husband usually uses as he alternates that with his F-150. I have been trying to drive the hyundai one day a week just to give my baby a little break.....
Mine also sits in the garage all nice and cozy all weekend (we use the
F-150 on the weekends)

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

You probably don't want my opinion, but here goes. Drive it. My jeep is 9+ weeks old and has ~9,200 miles in it. I practice what I preach

ETA - why do people care what the miles are when the car is paid off? Dive it til it drops then get a new one.

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

My commute is 105 miles and when I hit traffic I don't get bummed out and get angry, I just open my sunroof and turn up the music. I'm sure people have seen me in my Jeep more than once just enjoying myself. I'm just happy to have a nice vehicle to be driving around in with a nice stereo with the music I like listening to. My 10 month old Summit has 23,000 miles on it. I'm not worried about it falling apart since my last Laredo had 180,000+ miles that I racked up in 9 years.

Drive your Jeep. That's why you bought it!

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

I understand your concern. Speaking as someone who doesn't keep vehicles a hugely long time, I am well aware that mileage = money, because when you go to trade it in or sell it, high miles can be a huge reduction in vehicle value.

What I would do is buy an older Grand Cherokee or similar vehicle for a beater. Some WKs, lots of WJs and ZJs are very inexpensive, and will provide you an inexpensive DD to keep the miles off your WK2. You could likely find one for trade that you could do an even swap for your BMW for.

That's what I'd do.

It seems much more expensive to be paying a car payment on a car your not driving than to take the deprecation hit.
