Having two cars have more advantages then just keeping the miles off of the newer car.

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

You made it sound like 70 - 100 thousand miles on your Jeep would be a bad thing when it's paid off. I'm perfectly comfortable keeping vehicles many more miles than that. I'm usually a little tired of them long before they're even close to worn out. My previous 3 Jeeps have a combined total of nearly 500,000 miles and very few problems.

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

I'm over 60k on my 2011 - and growing quickly! My daily commute is 100 miles round trip, and the weekends usually see trips or whatever to add to that. My jeep isn't worth squat now, but I don't care as I plan to keep it a long time.

Hopefully these wk2s last as long as other grand cherokees do, or I'll have a busted jeep after my loan is paid off If you plan to keep it, don't worry about it. If you plan to trade it off, you're going to lose your pants in the deal anyways.

Drive it.

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

I have a 2005 WK 4.7 Limited with 112xxx k miles on it. I still owe almost $11k on it. (i got screwed by the stealership with the one) Now that its got over 100k on it, im doing what ever i can to drive it as much as i can. My first jeep was a 1987 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 5 speed I6 also Dark Khaki like my WK. It was purchased by my father in 1991 with 90k on it. In 2008, when I sold the engine (body rotted badly) it had 247k miles on it. Now i have a goal! I will do what ever i have to to make this WK surpass 247k miles. I drive on average about 15 to 20k a year but ive still got a long way to go. Even if it means dumping money in to it in repairs, Because at this point its not worth even close to what i owe, noone is going to pay what i owe on it with 112k miles if i were to sell it so at this point, keep it, maintain it, pay for it and drive it is what ill do!

Since my frist XJ ive had 3 xjs of my own all bought with a min of 100k on it. Thats not including any of the jeeps ive helped friends find and buy.

Even so, every now and then I have to drive the 458 to work. With a Montana winter coming I still don't want to drive my 458 to work, but in reality the cost of winterizing both vehicles is off-putting, to say the least. Plus, the 458 was not built for harsh winter.

To add, I can't stomach the thought of finally paying off my 458 only to have 75 - 100k on the clock (it would be more if I let my wife drive her).

So, for those of you who DD their 458, what words of encouragement or advice can you give (apart from work closer to home!). How do I not be a mileage nazi!

Re: How do I not be a "mileage nazi"?

My 2011 JGC Overland w/ Hemi, after 15 months of ownership, just hit 26k on the odometer. I can understand the point-of-view of keeping the miles down but this is a DD. Perhaps I would feel differently if it was a specialty car.

Cars today, with proper maintenance, should have plenty of life remaining beyond the 100k mile mark. I would also agree with an earlier point, time can be the enemy as well as lack of use.

I like the BMW that you have but considering the age and perhaps mileage, I would think the chances of breaking down somewhere are greater vs. your newer WK2.

There's a big difference between "not driving" the car and "not commuting" in the car.

ETA - why do people care what the miles are when the car is paid off? Dive it til it drops then get a new one.
Nice!! That's what I wanted to hear!

My 10 month old Summit has 23,000 miles on it. I'm not worried about it falling apart since my last Laredo had 180,000+ miles that I racked up in 9 years.

Drive your Jeep. That's why you bought it!
Wow, 105. I should quit my complaining! You are right about the certain serenity the WK2 brings about. I can still slightly smell the "new car smell" when I hop in after busting my hump at work all day and it brings a smile to my face.

That's the point I need to get at mentally. I do plan on keeping the WK2 for the long haul and no matter whether I trade in or sell I'm still taking a hit. So I may as well enjoy her and drive the bolts off and stop stink-eyeing the odometer!

You are right, it's not a specialty, garage queen type of vehicle, but it has that special affinity to me as being my first brand new vehicle. I maintain a very high level of care for my vehicles and know that proper, responsible ownership leads to longevity more so than other factors; so like I mentioned it's just getting my mind wrapped around keeping it for a long time and not worrying about mileage.

My Bimmer currently has 217k on the clock, zero rust, B+ condition overall. She still pulls and runs like it has only 50k on it. I trust her (not a WK2 level of trust) and know I can get at the very least 300k (though I'm shooting for 400k). The BMW M20 (which mine is) and the M50 aren't bulletproof, they're IED-proof.
