How Far Will '14 Drive With NO Key Fob ?

Just curious as to how far the '14 Grand Cherokee will drive when the Key Fob is NOT inside the cabin with the Driver ?

I thought of this the other day when I stopped to get a Bagel at the local deli and left her running with the A/C on, but the key fob was in my pocket. I know the warning beeps that the Fob has left, but if somebody got inside the Jeep, how far could they drive ?

I did test this at home by giving the Key Fob to my wife, and was surprised to see I could still drive 50 feet to the end of the driveway. I didn't want to drive any further in the street in case it did shut off the engine so I backed up, but is there a distance limit ?

Also I wonder if I could lock the door with the Handle Push Button while the engine is still running and then just unlock it when I come back ? (I will test this tonight)

Thanks,
Tom

There is a very recent thread on the subject. Several folks tested this.

Re: How Far Will '14 Drive With NO Key Fob ?

You can lock the Jeep while it is running from outside with the key fob in your pocket. I did this last week when I was in Las Vegas. My dog was inside and I had the a/c running full blast while I went inside the store to get something.

It would be nice if the Jeep shuts down if the key fob is not detected after 5 mins or so. But again, if the fob's batteries die as you are driving on the highway, the Jeep may shut down on you.

Cheers,
-A

Re: How Far Will '14 Drive With NO Key Fob ?

If the 14's are like the 11's then it will run until you shut it off.

I am guessing this if for safety reasons.

My mother started the car then forgot something in the house, took the keys to open the front door and left them in the house and drove off ignoring the dinging sound telling her that "the key has left the vehicle"

When she got to the store she realized the she did not have her keys with her and she only realized that because she locks the car with the fob remote.

I had to leave work and bring the keys out of the house.

So don't worry about it cutting out... and evengthough some of you think that there should be a time limit on how long it would run you wouldn't want that if you were separated from the keys and needed to use the car in a emergency.

Re: How Far Will '14 Drive With NO Key Fob ?

Shutting down a running car would be a safety hazard. I don`t think any manufacturer would do that. In cars with Auto start/stop system it may be a little different story.

Nope!!!!!! The veh will not shut down. The fob has RFID chip which is powered by outside source radio waves- in this case the veh detects if the fob is present. The battery in fob powers a transmitter for door locks, alarm activation, ect. A fob battery is not required to start the veh except for the remote start function.

My main concern was having somebody jump in the Jeep and drive away while I was in the Deli getting coffee - I really like to leave it running on the Hot and Cold days. (In my mind I hoped not having the key fob would shut down the engine as a Security Feature, but wasn't thinking about Safety issues if you accidently forgot the key fob and the engine shut down !!).

This morning I locked the door with the Push Button while it was running and then touched the handle to unlock when I got back - worked great and solves my problem.

Thanks for the replies !

Re: How Far Will '14 Drive With NO Key Fob ?

everything I have read tells me after an remote start the truck will shut down in 15 min. if no key fob is detected. The user guide also said that after a remote start it would shut down in 15min if the start button is not pressed? I don't know I am just tring to occupy my mind while i wait for my new ride. I could be wrong.
