What's the key to getting $4000+ off MSRP when negotiating?

Make sure they know you're willing to sign papers that day. And if they say no don't sit around, just get out of there promptly and wait for a call while you drive to the next dealer. These trucks aren't hard to find if you have even a little flexibility and most jeep salesmen aren't exactly masterful negotiators in my experience

Edit: also not sure where you're located the KOONS group buy is pretty good even if you just use it as leverage

Never bought a vehicle brand new but why would they not have you sign the papers that day? Plan on buying a new 2017 later this year or early next

If they think you're shopping around and not ready to commit they don't want to give you a low number if you're just going to go down the street and use it to negotiate further - many people do this and that's why a lot of dealers (foolishly)won't talk price via email or phone if the buyer is local. Telling them 'hey if you hit this number I will be satisfied and you'll have a deal today' gives them some reassurance and motivation to make it happen

Thats exactly what happened to me when i was looking last year. No dealers wanted to talk price at all, said there prices on the website was the lowest they will go and said forget it and don't bother coming down if you want lower. This was like 10-15 dealerships that acted like this lol.

Bet their tune will be different now that the HA isn't a fresh model and after this whole recall debacle. Keep us updated.

A couple things to consider here...

If they don't bring the HA back for 2017 then the demand remains for them while you can still get one.

The shifter recall impacts the 2015 far more than the 2016. In either case, software updates (15's) and new shifter assy's (early build 16's) are available. The software update for autopark doesn't apply to the 16's for those who don't or wouldn't like it, which makes the 16 more attractive.

Start by getting internet price quotes from several dealerships. Make sure you walk out of the door of at least two dealerships. This way you have an idea of what their rock bottom price is. If they let you walk out the door, they probably couldn't go any lower than what they offered. Compare that price with another dealership you visit. A lot of dealerships here also had dealer added accessories like nitro gas, leather protection package, etc etc, don't be afraid to tell them you don't want them and won't pay for them. For example I got tints for free because I told them their markup was too high and I could get them way cheaper else where and told them to take it off because I wasn't paying something like $500 for tints on 2 front windows. They ended up giving all that for free because they weren't actually going to take off the tints or take out the nitro in tires.

I only negotiate via email and refuse to give out my phone number. However, negotiating in person isn't hard. Do your research first and know your prices (invoice is a must) for any potential models. I always use TrueCar for relative market values.

Oh and NEVER negotiate on payment. Settle on price, THEN discuss down payment and rate. Same for leasing. Price drives everything. Also know ALL rebates available including factory to dealer (these can be found on Edmunds usually). All of those dollars are negotiable. Even doc fees are negotiable. If they won't drop it ask for a price reduction. Ask for everything. If negotiating via email pit the dealers against one another...assuming they have similar inventories.

Finally, buy at the end of the month...especially the last business day. Dealers get volume bonuses so if they really need a sale to hit a bonus you have more leverage to eat into their hold back (however no way to know if they need the sale so just push harder). Small dealers or in less populous locations are usually more desperate for sales than in large car markets do consider pricing within several hundred miles if you can drive to pick up.
