How often should I need alignment?

The dealer I go to checks the alignment on every vehicle that comes in right in the write up isle and then leaves the results in the vehicle for you to see on pick up. The first time I took my Overland in at about 4k miles it showed the toe was out so I had an alignment. Now At 16k miles I had it in and it shows the toe and camber are out. I personally think it handled better before they did the first alignment. So what do you think does the air suspension going up and down all the time cause more alignment issues?

Re: How often should I need alignment?

I've never had an alignment done on my '11 since buying new. It drove straight with no pulls or vibrations during the test drive, so I told the dealer not to align it during the new car prep. It still drives like new. Tires (rotated every 5k) show no unusual wear or cupping. If I may coin a phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I'm curious... how do they check the alignment in the write up aisle?

They have the Hunter alignment clamps that go on the wheels in the write up isle and as your being written up they check the alignment although I don't know how accurate it is. The Overland is supposed to be in sport mode to check wheel alignment and it was at normal height when they checked it.

Re: How often should I need alignment?

Greetings,

In my neck of the woods, right after pothole season, it goes in for a wheel alignment. Last season, the alignment was not that bad considering this was the worse that I have seen in many years.

Best for now.

Man, I'd seriously have to question the accuracy of that method.

Re: How often should I need alignment?

Some argue that you only need to check your alignment if you feel vibrations or if you notice uneven wear on your tires. Some feel that an alignment once a year at the end of pothole season is a good preventive measure.

In addition, some tire manufacturers require alignment every 10,000 to 15,000 miles to keep your tire warranty (defects, excessive wear).

I had mine done at 15,000 miles because my tires were showing signs of scalloping. I noticed a bit of a difference in driving and my gas mileage went up about 1 mpg. A gain of 1 mpg is about 30 less tanks a year and a savings of about $115. The alignment was about $80.

In my case, the alignment paid for itself, not including lengthening the life of my tires.

Re: How often should I need alignment?

If its pulling to the left then there is a tsb for it. But don't hold your breath, most dealers and tyre shops are hopeless correcting it. I found the best place is to pay to have it done by a 4x4 suspension shop. They get it spot on everytime. Cost more but worth it if you have ongoing alignment problems.

Yeah, I was wondering if they did it by checking your credit report/bank balance myself...

Re: How often should I need alignment?

The Hunter alignment systems are some of the best that money can buy. However, the tech using it can make it or break it. The new Hunter systems use heads that clamp onto the tire to prevent wheel damage. It makes the setup/ measuring portion of the alignment a very quick process.

As to what alot of dealerships are switching to now is the "quick check" platform, I feel pretty confident that for the few measurements it gathers, it's accurate. Keep in mind, the quick check doesn't measure all the angles. It just sells the alignment. Nobody is going to crawl on the floor to perform any necessary adjustments...especially a service writer. LOL I've used Hunter products for years and I will say that they have their stuff together.

Click the link below to see it in action.

Re: How often should I need alignment?

Wow I am glad I read this thread as I have been much LESS conservative in getting the alignment done. I love that some people have calculated the lost MPG Vs the cost of the alignment and that it pays for itself. I am going to have my girlfriend's 2012 done this weekend.
