I own a 2012 Overland V8.
I almost left my GC on all night, lucky I had to run down to the parking garage to grab some remaining items. If the vehicle was left on and I walked away from it with the key fob, will it turn off after 15 minutes or would the truck have stayed on all night until it ran out of gas?
I'll have to pay close attention when pressing the button to turn the car off.
It would have run until the gas ran out, or the engine overheated and died. There is a thread here somewhere discussing leaving the Jeep with the fob in your pocket and engine running. If it wasn't locked, someone could have driven it away, wrecked it, and probably sued you.
Some info I found is below- Not sure if this would be the case if the engine is running.
If the ignition switch is left in the ACC or ON/RUN (engine not running) position and the transmission is in PARK, the system will automatically time out after 30 minutes of inactivity and the ignition will switch to the OFF position.
I left mine running not too long ago when I ran into a deli. It was locked.
I guess there was an advantage when I always locked my car with the fob as I walked away. It meant I also had the key in hand.
I also started the car one day while I thought I was opening the hatch. I can't read the fob without glasses, and I use it so seldom I can't remember which button does what.
Well gee, at least when I was driving my GM I didn't have to worry about my transmission always being in the wrong gear and not accelerating until the pedal is mashed up against the headlights.
It has happened to me couple of times. I wish the Jeep would make a sound when the engine is running and the driver door is opened. I thought of doing a hack to make it sound, but never got to it.
Every car I have driven will make a sound if the engine is running and driver door opened. Our Cayenne will make a huge continous BEEP noise when door is opened and engine running. With engine off, it just dings when door opened and key in ignition.
Not to be nasty, but doesn't everything go dark when you turn off your Jeep? Can't remember the '12 ( I have a '14), but wouldn't the radio and the illumination of that radio stay on if you left the Jeep running?
If the comment is directed at me, here is the situation: I live in a high-rise building with parking underground. There are a few massive exhaust/inlet fans that blow air into the parking garage to circulate the air. When these fans are on they are extremely loud. Everything does go dark in the car, I usually notice it but for the life of me can't remember if everything turned off. I also had a lot on my mind with things that come up in life.
An unlikely situation was that I might have been fooling around with the keyfob and hit remote start twice.
I guess in the end I'm glad I went to check on it and the car didn't overheat, etc.
I left my '14 Overland V8 on for more than an hour but it was locked and the key fob was in my pocket, it was very hot when I got back (AC was off) but nothing bad happened... lesson learned, make sure it's off before leaving it!
Two or three times my '12 has not turned off when I pressed the button, I shifted to R the back to P and it would turn off. On a bright day with sunglasses on the tach is almost invisible. Guess the modern system makes a runaway impossible. Right.
You can leave the jeep ideling all day in 100 degree temps with the a/c on high and it won't overheat. I know this from experience as I drive a Durango for work. Same motor etc as in the jeeps whether v6 or v8. I believe u can have a dealer input a setting that will turn off the engine in certain time frames after the key fob is not detected and the vehicle is in park.
