I call B.S. but what do you think

So, I dropped her off to get the paint bubbles fixed (Chrysler is obviously picking up the tab for that) and have the brake TSB taken care of. Before I went over there, I did my research and saw that there is 1 possibly 2 other TSB's that pertain to my vehicle, so I asked the service guy to have them do all of them since the car will be there for 3 days..

Before I left, he wanted to give my a heads up that if there is a TSB and your vehicle isn't suffering from the symptoms that the TSB would address, if they were to do the work on it, then the symptoms could then be created and there wouldn't be a fix to it.

Granted, I wouldn't have them flash anything if there wasn't an issue (I think there is a radio one, thats why I asked them to do it), but flashing the software would then create the problems and there wouldn't be a fix to it? WTF!

Re: I call B.S. but what do you think

It seems to be a dealer thing that if you request a TSB, the first thing they are going to ask you is if you are experiencing any of the symptoms. There are any number of reasons for asking that, despite the fact that the mother-ship would be paying them for doing the work...including work load in their bays.

AFAIK, the parts are not out yet for the brake recall, however...

Re: I call B.S. but what do you think

Yea, but the fact that the TSB would actually cause a problem if none exists was the part that caused to me to scratch my head.

as far as the brake issue, I think it is just a flash, but I could be wrong. I got the notification in the mail and thats what he said... I will get the breakdown when I pick her up on Friday...

What if they do the radio (UConnect software) update and then your backup camera starts getting jumpy? I can understand what he is saying on that but if the customer requests the TSB then they should do it.

Agree as well, but the way he made it sound was that, if the problem isn't there, then it will be after the flash.. Made it sound like 10 times out of 10 it will happen

Re: I call B.S. but what do you think

Ya that's not right...I'd say BS on that as well. Just warn the customer if there isn't a problem now and they do it, that he informed said customer there might be an new issue and they can't fix it. "Would you like me to do the TSB?" says the service guy. lol

Re: I call B.S. but what do you think

IIRC - Some TSBs (RRTs) are supposed to be done on all vehicles that come into the shop. Some are to be done if the owner complains about the symptom. And, there are some that only get done if the tech can duplicate the symptom.

Nowhere did I see that TSBs are to be done because the customer saw it on the internet and wants it done. For the dealer to assume that nobody would ask for it if they didn't have the symptom would be foolish. Many will ask for it because they know it's there and feel entitled. Then they will cry, kick, and scream like a baby if it has an adverse effect.

If you want a TSB done, rather than ask for it, read the requirements and complain about the symptom.

As for causing irreparable damage ... not so sure.

Re: I call B.S. but what do you think

The reason I put that out to the dealer was bc I always check to see if there are updates for the software. I.E., I wouldn't have known about the radio update had I not looked on here first.

Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Grand Cherokee Service Bulletins and Recalls.

So, I just figured I would go the same route again, not expecting to be told that you could damage your car if you do it and its not necessary..

Re: I call B.S. but what do you think

He's full of it.

If a flash in a TSB would cause problems when applied to a vehicle without the 'symptom', you can bet it would be in bold-face type in the TSB - requiring the tech to verify the symptom.

Yup... that's my sentiment, but still wanted to put out it in front of the boys.

The radio update is a RRT and should have been done even if you just went in for an oil change.

I agree with you that it is unlikely they can cause permanent damage by doing an unnecessary update.
