Re: If money was no object...

As things stand with the current powertrain combinations, if money was no object, I would have chosen the Hemi. I opted for the V6 based on initial test drive impressions and my desire to get better fuel economy, and sort of wish I had gotten the V8. It isn't that the V6 doesn't have enough power per se, but due to the fact that the transmission keeps the engine in a rev range where the V6 doesn't have enough torque to smoothly accelerate without a downshift.

I find the V6 to be more than adequate on the highway, and delivers good MPG. I've been getting 23 - 24 MPG on the freeway and the powertrain is smooth in the process. As soon as you transition to more of a mixed mode driving environment (think suburban traffic across parkways and expressways) mileage drops considerably, and I find the powertrain to feel under powered. I'm seeing between 15 & 16 MPG in these driving situations, a bit below what I expected. I'm curious whether the modifications made to the Pentastar for application in the '12 Wrangler would improve its tractability in the GC, but as things stand I would've been willing to pay the extra $$ for the V8 to improve around town performance.

Re: If money was no object...

HEMI HEMI HEMI. As many have said, nobody buys the V8 and says they wished they had gotten the HEMI. Not everyone buys the V6 and wishes they had gotten the HEMI either but you have already seem some people on here say they wish they had gotten the HEMI.

I get 21-22 on the Highway and mixed driving is yielding 16.4-16.7 MPG consistently. You're talking about a couple miles per gallon but a big difference in performance. People who talk about resale are forgetting that people buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee are expecting a 4X4 and a V8 so the resale value on that will ALWAYS be higher than the V6 regardless of gas prices which are coming down by the way

If money were no object, I'd get the 2012 SRT8.

I disagree completely. In my locality at least the V8 is a slower sell from a new perspective and certainly from a used perspective. The Jeep is the last midsized SUV to even offer a V8, and I bet in the next few years they won't anymore. We didn't even consider the V8, and when shopping immediately discounted anything with the V8.

As for gas prices, they may slide down and up somewhat, but overall the trend is up. Not many economists out there expect that trend to change.

I got the hemi. 15 mpg average, 20 on long highway trips. And I bike to work when it's not raining.

Simply look at the sales data. When buying a Jeep, MOST (not all) people opt for the 4X4 and V8 when buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The fuel economy between the two really isn't that different. The diesel will be a different story but the V6 doesn't get 10MPG or better than the V8. Resale is always going to be higher for the V8 and there is simply no arguing that. In your case as is the case with some, you ruled out the V8 because you wanted a V6 and that's fine but that's not what most do. That's all I'm saying. As far as gas going up, it can only go up so high. Look what happened when gas hit $4 on average across the US, demand plummeted. China has been devaluing their currency for years and is finally getting called on it and their demand will curtail when people have to pay full price and not have their gas costs covered in part by the government and a favorable exchange rate. Those who think gas will hit $5 or $6, it won't happen. Demand will fall through the floor. Of course if we just stop trading oil via speculation the problem would be solved and we would see prices stabilized and adjust based on true supply and demand but I digress

Re: If money was no object...

If you need to be told what to buy, I agree you'd better go with the hemi. Anyone who likes the 6, especially if it was the 3.7 is just weird. I know I am.

Re: If money was no object...

To the title of this thread..if money were no object why would it even be a debate? If money isn't an object, then the extra cost of the V8 doesn't matter and neither does the gas savings (however small or large). So....you're left with more power and more towing....hmmmmmm
