Re: If money was no object...

Went back and forth as well...the Hemi is NOT a fast car, but it is smooth. I agree with the posters who got the 6 and put their foot in it...The 6 makes a lot of noise and promises all while drinkin the Texas tea. Real world driving, I really do not think there is a significant true mpg delta between the two- especially around town.
Mine has about 550 miles on it since new and I think the calculator says 17.1+/- since I picked it up.

You have a source for that?

Because I was told by *every* Jeep dealer I spoke to, including the owner of a dealer who is the friend of a coworker of mine, that the V6 sells much better than the V8, and the V8s take longer to sell, etc. I would say 80% of the leftover 2011s in my region when I bought mine were V8s. None of these people would have had any reason to lie to me.

I also know from looking at basically every WK2 on the road for the past year because I've wanted one so bad, the vast majority of them are V6s. Plus, you have every other competing midsize SUV dropping their V8 options. If the V8s were the best sellers, why would they do that?

Quote:
The diesel will be a different story but the V6 doesn't get 10MPG or better than the V8.
It depends on how you drive. The V8 requires midgrade fuel too, which drives the cost up from a budget perspective. Using the EPA estimates the V8 costs approximately $850 more per year to fuel, add that to the additional cost of purchase, and reduced resale and it costs a *lot*. If you own it for 10 years, assuming the price of fuel stays flat thats an additional $8,500 spent, $1500 for the V8 in the first place, $10,000 more to drive the V8. Thats a lot.

Quote:
Resale is always going to be higher for the V8 and there is simply no arguing that.
Why is there no arguing that? Again, thats not what I see when I watch these things sell.

Quote:
Those who think gas will hit $5 or $6, it won't happen
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on that. Even if the price of fuel doesn't really go up...inflation has got to happen at some point and that will drive it up...as well as the cost of everything else...

Quote:
Of course if we just stop trading oil via speculation the problem would be solved and we would see prices stabilized and adjust based on true supply and demand but I digress
THIS we can agree on!

Look, I'm not saying if the V8 is what you really want you shouldn't buy the V8. Just don't fool yourself, or let others fool you into thinking the V8 doesn't cost more than the V6 in the long run...it CERTAINLY does...and if fuel prices go up, which I and plenty of people who are smarter than me think they will...it will only be more expensive.

Re: If money was no object...

If money were no object I would get a 2013 Porsche 911 Turbo as soon as they're released.

As it is, I got a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 HEMI today!!!!! Just went for a drive and the effortless acceleration was welcome. I also really like how the interior lights up at night.

Totally off topic but it is cool isn't it? Probably one of the coolest vehicles at night I've driven...

Re: If money was no object...

I am broke and have a hemi. If I were to buy another jeep tomorrow (non wrangler) it would have a hemi. I love that engine.

If I had FU money, I would have allot a cars but a few of them would be jeeps!

I'm going to have to make up reasons to go for a drive at night.

Re: If money was no object...

Perhaps it's the line of "if money was no object" because that would open a lot of options for an SUV. Even staying within the Jeep family I would go with the SRT8. However the question might be if as a buyer you had some budget flexibility would you opt for the Hemi. For the (roughly) $2k adder it would come down to a test drive and if it fits your driving style and need.

I went for the Hemi and didn't think twice about it. While unimpressive considering the HP and torque ratings it is better vs. the Penstar. Part of my decision was the bundling with the QD-II and ELSD.

I agree with the statement that a V8 will eventually be phased out in favor of small displacement engines with forced induction. A lot of manufacturers have made the switch with great results. Chryco is a bit behind in this area. Look at the Ford Eco-boost V6 vs. their V8's. A lot of truck buyers are opting for this powertrain with better power and fuel economy.

This might be one of the few remaining years to get a JGC w/ a HEMI as CAFE requirements continue to push the avg fuel economy up. Take each for a test drive and come to your own conclusion.

Regards,
NHman

Love lively debate The HEMI doesn't REQUIRE midgrade, it RECOMMENDS it but states that REGULAR grade fuel is perfectly ok to use. I have done so on 2009 Dodge Ram Laramie for over two years and on the JGC since I bought it a month ago.

Mid-grade (89 octane) is 10 cents cheaper than 87 octane where I live.

If someone were unable to compare the two and only had seat time in the v6, would it really feel that underpowered with daily driving?

The lowest octane rating in Australia is 91. Our mid grade is 95 and premium is 98! Either the measurement for octane ratings is different in the US or there is a reason you think the v6 is underpowered I test drove one with (I'm assuming) mid range (95) and even then seemed a little sluggish.

Wait 12 months and get the diesel it's faster than the V8 and average 8.1 ltr/km which im guessing is somewhere around 25mpg.

yes. I drove the v6 version before the v8 and both me and the wife felt it was underpowered. The explorer was the same way. We both liked the vehicle but it was slower than my mountain bike, kinda like the v6 version of the JGC.
