If money was no object...

would you get the V-6 or the Hemi? I've been leaning toward the 6 for better fuel economy, but lately I've been considering the extra muscle and acceleration.

Also- what kinds of "real world" milage does each get? If the difference is really only 2-3 MPG, I might lean towards the Hemi....

Finally- there's the "guilt" factor. I'm not the most tree-hugging type of guy, but I'd feel a bit guilty with such a gas-guzzler.

Re: If money was no object...

I dont have a wk2, but I did go with the v6 in my WK, and completely regret it. Take it from me, get the 5.7 and enjoy it.

I cant tell you the number of times where I NEED (not want) more power and its just not there. I guess it depends on what your intentions are for the vehicle, but I would definitely get the v8.

Re: If money was no object...

I feel your pain! I too struggled with the exact same dilemma. I switched in 2009, from my 2008 4.7L Grand Cherokee to a 2010 Outback. While it certainly has better gas mileage and is quite impressive in the snow we get around here around Lake Erie (traveling from Cleveland to Buffalo) it just wasn't the same. Although I picked the 3.6L the power was underwhelming and the vehicle overall was quirky.

When I decided to go back to Jeep, my initial choice was the 3.6 Pentastar. I heard so many good reviews I thought "I could have my cake and eat it too". The mileage was not as good as the Subie, but I thought it was still good. I took several test drives in the 4x4 6 and tried to convince myself that the performance was OK, "it has enough power to get out of its own way", "I can tow" etc. I was happily deluded until I drove the 5.7L Overland, all my arguments disappeared, and I knew I would regret the 6 cyl choice I was going to make, so I went 5.7. The difference in mileage is significant. I do a mix of highway and city so I imagine the fuel economy is going to be on the lower end of the range, but getting into it every day and enjoying the ride is worth the variable cost of added fuel expense, at least to me. I might think differently in two years, but for now...

I was also considering the VW Touareg Lux Diesel, which has great performance and mileage, but the price went up for 2012, with a premium for the diesel engine and fuel, the Jeep was a much better value.

I do hope Jeep decides to drop a diesel in the Grand Cherokee. Although more expensive, the added torque and fuel economy will help assuage my guilt.

Re: If money was no object...

If money were absolutely no object I'd buy a Hemi Overland Summit with every option.

However, money is an object. Its not that I couldn't afford a loaded Hemi Overland Summit and the gas to fuel it, I could...but it would be overkill for our needs and a waste of money.

Saying that, I am 100% satisfied with the performance we get out of our Laredo X V6. The only thing I really wish it had was a memory drivers seat. Is it fast? No...but neither is the Hemi...its just less slow. The performance is adequate, and the mileage while still terrible...is less terrible.

Gas prices are going up overall also, where will they be in 2-3 years? Who knows...but my money is on between $4-$5 a gallon. The difference is even more distinct then, and if gas is that high and you want out of the Jeep...good luck unloading the Hemi model.

Re: If money was no object...

I am experiencing some of the same indecision, for many of the reasons already stated in this thread. But I may wait until the next model year to pull the trigger: I'd like to test drive the Pentastar 8-speed combo in the GC and see how that goes. I know it won't have a Hemi punch, but I am hoping it will be a better acceleration/fuel economy combo than the current Pentastar 5-speed combo.

Re: If money was no object...

As you tick off more options on the Jeep, the need for the V8 becomes more compelling.

The V-6 works perfectly well, but the V-8 feels better.

Re: If money was no object...

If money was no object I'd be deciding whether to drive my Hemi GC or my 911 Turbo ... but since it is an object I drove my Hemi GC today.

I came from a 4Runner with a notorious underpowered v6 and drove both the 6 and 8 of the WK2. The 6 was fine, but the hemi is much more effortless.

As stated above, the hemi isn't fast, as my wife's MDX will crush it, but it feels good and pulls strong. If you drive both you'll know which one fits you best.

My real world gas mileage after 10 months / 8,000 miles is 15mpg. It's easy to get 20 mph if you do all highway driving. I don't drive that much so paying 10 cents more per gallon to get the preferred 89 octane for the Hemi and losing a few miles per gallon is really only a few bucks per fill up so it's not a big deal from my perspective.

The real tree huggers would prefer you drive a Prius or a bike, so don't worry about the guilt factor. However you may want to avoid putting a bunch of Hemi badges on your new Jeep... I kinda feel like my Hemi is in stealth mode since other than the dual pipes and the sound, no ones ever knows.

Re: If money was no object...

Ya a bike they would like ... a Prius actually hurts the enviroment until you get about 50K miles ..

Plus if you are going to put on skid plates and aftermarket bumpers later like ARB and a Winch .... bla bla bla .. you need all the HP you can get....

Re: If money was no object...

The Hemi is worth it even when money is added into the equation. The pentastar shouldn't even be offered IMO.

I really don't care about resale value on a vehicle. It's going to be lousy with anything you get. I buy vehicles to have fun with and the 6 is just no fun. While the Hemi may not be as fast as some of the others stock, that is easily fixed with some parts. The 6 is hopeless as far as performance is concerned and will always be slow.

I really don't care about gas mileage either. I need something to tow my dirtbikes/quads/anything else I like to have fun on and the gas mileage is poor with anything that will do that. I looked at full size trucks but a suv as nice as the Jeep with a v8 was a better option than a truck. I would gladly pay for the increase in power over the 6.

Re: If money was no object...

I really do get 20mpg at 75-80 on the freeway. The difference of 1-2 mpg is not worth the VERY LACKLUSTER performance of the V6.
