Re: If You Cancel a Summit Order What Would You Buy?

I am NOT going to cancel my Summit order, but in order to satisfy my all-American OCD, I'm upgrading my 2008 Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS to the new 2011 traction-control model next week. It's at the dealer, no waiting required!!

So if I bail on the Jeep because I am fed up with Chrysler just plain sucking at communication... and if you were in the same position.. WHAT WOULD YOU BUY?
I cancelled the order on my Summit this past Monday. My order was placed on 12/10/2010 and had no progress on it other than receiving a VIN. Absolute lack of communication and complete ignorance regarding the status of my order. It was between a LR4 and a F-150 Raptor. However, I drove the F-150 Platinum 4X4, loved it and bought it yesterday. It has almost the same options as the JGC, is so much bigger and the Sync system is AWESOME. Puts the UConnect to shame. I am so happy with it. Kind if glad it worked out the way it did. Also, with all the incentives, it ended up being cheaper than the Summit. The sticker was $52000 and got it for $40990.

I think the alternative list being discussed here are good options to the Summit. I would add the Lexus RX350 to the list as well. The only one that doesn't seem to fit is the F-150 Raptor! But Pooch, I am happy that things worked out for you!

BMW X5 5.0
Cayenne S
Audi Q7
Infiniti QX56
Land Rover LR4
Lexus RX350

Sorry but the Lexus isn't in the same league, it's a glorified stationwagon. No offroad cred what so ever.

The Touareg seems to be left out a lot and in reality that's the closest competitor to the WK2 IMHO.

It seems like you were willing and able to pay the uplift in price and in return you got:

1) Much better availability
2) Almost certainly a better dealer experience

I guess in the end you get what you pay for. Those of us who recognized the Overland as a relative bargain (given that Jeep had improved so much) are dealing with the fact that neither Chrysler nor their dealer network are (currently) positioned for the higher-end buyer who rightly expects a premium experience for his coin.

So we save some $$, but we wait and put up with goofball dealers.
I have ordered a set off-road wheels and will decide on tires after testing fitments. There are videos of the QX off-road on the 22s, but I don't want to be paying for rim repairs when a set of off-road wheels are relatively cheap.

QX comes with basic skid plate and front tow hook (and a true full size spare mounted below). Clearance is great and suspension travel allows for some extreme maneuvers. Also has all the adjustable modes to make life easier. On road-performance is extremely refined wth the hyrdaulic leveling suspension. The QX is based on the legendary Nissan Patrol, which is built with extreme conditions in mind, so despite its country club appearance, the QX can definitely handle the terrain.

I think the difference in price between the QX and Summit has much more to do with the cars than the dealership experience. While I considered the Summit a bargain, I consider the QX as great, if not a better bargain given the level of refinement in the product. I still love the new Jeep Overland and think it is a great product, but when I decided I was willing to spend a little more on a SUV and cost wasn't a primary consideration, the QX was an easy choice. I would probably get a Cayenne S before the Summit too, but the Summit would be my choice over the BMW, Audi, etc.

The new Touareg here in a America is a neutered version. I agree about the Lexus. I don't think the X5 is too far behind.

Re: If You Cancel a Summit Order What Would You Buy?

I'd probably get a Touareg TDI instead. Its in many ways better than the Jeep, just not in love with the styling. I might also consider a new Yukon Denali, as I have an older one and its been a good truck, and I have a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon for any offroading I might need to do. They lack a few features that I wish it had, like HIDs, but overall its a good package and I much prefer the GM small block to the hemi.

I'll say I've driven the new QX and its truely great...I love the interior and for its size its driving manners are beyond reproach...however I would have to be blind to buy it. It might be the ugliest truck on the market.

When I first saw pictures I thought it was hideous but I was going to reserve judgement until I saw it in the flesh...it only looked worse in person.

pooch1005 - 100% do not blame you, considering the bizarre story of your order. I have heard that Ford's Sync is much more advanced than Chrysler's UConnect, but am curious about the major differences. Care to comment further on Sync's goodies?

Re: If You Cancel a Summit Order What Would You Buy?

I came close on a few of the cars listed. I now have a q7 with about 100k of my own miles. I love it, but i want something more rugged and versitle with my two kids and huge dog in tow. I also did not want to compromise performance espcially the get up and go when i punch it. The overland hemi that i drove was equally as capable, if not moreso, than my q7. I am not sure about the long drives, but i bet the summit will do just fine. My q7 was the absolute top of the line in 2007, and the fit and finish cannot touch the summit, but it has been a great car. I wanted a change so my first trip was to the infiniti dealer to scope a new qx. Loved it and it was truly a refined vehicle, but again with two kids, a big dog, and a serious fishing and mountain bike addiction, it was just too nice. The overland is a perfect balance of super fit and finish, a great powerful ride, and a car that i wont be afraid to take to the trails, tow my kids in, or toss a large pelagic in, not to mention drag around my 85 lb copilot dog. Combined with the fact that i can do all of this after work and tote clients around in style while.logging about 30k miles a year, and the overland summit is by far the best value in the market, imo. Now if the damn yhing would get built i would actually able to give a real review.

I really didn't like it when I saw it in pictures, however, in person I found the design to be very cohesive. I could do without the vents. I would prefer the nissan Patrol front end, but the Patrol isn't a option for U.S. buyers. I do think it is a huge improvement over the disjointed look of the previous QX.

Aesthetic preferences aside, it is a pretty amazing vehicle and definitely a great option for those looking for a large SUV with great off-road and on-road performance with an abundance of luxury, technology and decent fuel economy.

More voice control, including climate control. The voice recognition is superior too. I haven't had to repeat anything yet. Seems to process more quickly. Graphics and screen resolution are light years better (not to mention it's an 8" screen). The Sync system also uploads a vehicle health report via satellite and will text message your phone when your vehicle needs servicing and gives you multiple methods of scheduling an appointment. The Sirius travel link is awesome too. Can pull up 5 day forecast, weather radar of surrounding area, surrounding gas stations with gas prices, surrounding movie theaters with movies playing and times, plus much more.
