The M class is a nice vehicle, but so is the Cayenne, Touareg, LR4, and if you want The Ultimate D***head Machine, the X5, although some of those have been emasculated as far as low range, etc. goes.

An M Class with off road capabilities is quite nice.
I would expect a bit more expensive unless perhaps you get the smaller engine.
Considered each one.

Cayenne - to spec it out to be the equivalent of a JGC Summit you're looking at an obscene amount of money. In general, the base cost is reasonable but any additions/upgrades cost 6x more than you would expect. Service costs are also ridiculous. No manufacturer's extended warranty available.

Touareg - No air suspension available in the US. Engine choices are mediocre as well. Eliminated from consideration.

LR4 - Would go for RRS before I went there, but ultimately I don't see many advantages to Jeep there. Even worse reliability, terrible dealer network (I used to have a Jaguar and they're just as bad as Jeep), no extended manufacturer's warranty.

X5 - I'm not interested in an SUV shaped car. I want something with actual offroad capability. It doesn't have to be able to make it through advanced OR trails, but short of that it should be fine.

That's how I came to the M Class. My biggest gripe with the M Class is that for the current price you used to be able to get a biturbo V8. Now in order to do that you have to go up to the AMG, which I'm not willing to do. I guess their 3.0 bi-turbo is faster than our 5.7L, but the old V8 was sub-5 seconds 0-60.

Did some research and now am looking at the Mercedes M Class. The Jeep is a version of it, right? My theory is that maybe the Mercedes version of the JGC is exactly what I need. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

FYI - I gave up on the Porsche for several reasons, but the main ones are price of service, lack of extended warranty and the fact that what I could afford (the Macan) is just too small. A well optioned Cayenne S or GTS is just too expensive. Plus, I can get the M Class with a 4-Lo setting and other offroad goodies.
The WK2 shares the same Frame as the current M Class. There are also similarities in the transmission & aspects of the electronics. The M Class is a more refined vehicle but it lacks any real off road ability (compared to the WK2).

Can you elaborate further on this? The M Class has a full offroad package available, along with with a 2 speed transfer case, differential lock, and skid plates, plus it has the same air suspension and frame as the JGC anyway. So why would it be worse?

Also, youtube vids seem to indicate it is decent:

How about the new Volvo XC90? It's a big step forward in design for the company.

That centre piece looks like the 2014 Jeeps and some other interior designs .

I didn't know the current ML class offered an Air Suspension.

That might put it back on my list.

Not only does it have it, iirc it is exactly the same as what is on the JGC. But if someone can demonstrate that it is significantly worse offroad than a JGC then I might have to rethink this. But so far, I have absolutely no reason to think that.

Still, sad I'm willing to pay much more mainly not to deal with Jeep service. Then again, I don't plan on getting a new car for another 4-5 years so we'll see what happens between now and then.
