Re: If you were to give up your GC today, what would you get?

There are a lot of Amish folk around here. I have never seen a single 'one horse power' buggy broken down on the side of the road. Plus, both Walmart and Lowes give them special "indoor" parking. Well, the horse at least gets a roof over their head.

I wonder if the buggies come in Maximum Steel with Indigo/Brown interiors.

Hmmm

There is an episode of "Amish Mafia" featuring a Pimped Out Buggy show and contest. Some even had high end stereos. Not the Amish I remember from my youth!

I have seen one horse vehicles broken down. Granted if it happens too far from civilization, you have your emergency food source available.
The indoor parking is nice I suppose.
The engine doesn't need lubrication as such, but it does respond well to regular rubdowns instead of wax jobs. Arguably one of the more flex fuel engines available as motive force--ranges from alfalfa to hay to flowers, also apples substitute nicely for seafoam.
The exhaust products can be a bit rough to deal with, although one of them is good for your back yard garden and the other might be capable of recycling for your neighbor's diesel.

If I had to give up the GC, were to get something that wasn't another GC, then I would probably get the S-Line Audi Q7 TDI.

Just so happens that I am giving up my JGC and purchasing a 2015 Cherokee Limited, all the bells and whistles except the sunroof and charging pad.. Like the Jeeps, just don't need the size or the Hemi.

To be honest, they sure do hide this well. When you mentioned it, I did a lot of crawling around on the web to find out more.

But on their website, beyond the Off Road package (which talks of a 2 spd transfer case, but nothing about locking diffs), there's really no mention of this. There's certainly no mention of an air suspension, but to be honest there's no mention of ground clearance on their site either. I guess the "SPC" items (which I assume means special order) don't seem to be mentioned on their website (the air suspension, "AIRMATIC" is one of these).

I found a couple of articles talking about them lowering it down to 5-6" of ground clearance (!!), but then other articles/posts talking about the AIRMATIC which boosts it right back up.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"An On&Off Road Package is available for most markets (now including North America) as of the 2013 model year. The package adds a two-speed dual range Magna Powertrain transfer case with center differential lock, reduction gearing, underbody skid plates, and a 6-mode selectable terrain driving program system. The rear differential lock has been discontinued.[16]

Open front and rear differentials are fitted, and use four-wheel electronic traction system (4-ETS) to simulate front and rear differential locks."

Nevermind on the physical diff locks - that's from prior years. Then again, I don't have it on my JGC either (probably both have the same brake assisted 4WD).

2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class First Look

"The project leader for the ML, Dr. Uwe Ernstberger says that "Mercedes customers expect a high level of off-road ability." That's news to us, but Mercedes took the idea seriously enough that it will offer an off-road package beginning next year. It adds an underbody skidplate, two-speed transfer case, center differential lock and an enhanced air suspension that allows a maximum ground clearance of 11.2 inches and a fording depth of 23.6 inches. There is also a Land Rover-style electronic system that provides six transmission modes: one automatic, two off-road and three on-road modes covering winter, sport and trailer-pulling." (yeah, that's for 2012).
