If your 4x4 JGC needs to be towed...

What do you do when you can't start the engine and need to be towed? I'm wondering how to get the Jeep on a flatbed truck without damaging the drivetrain - you can't put the tranfer case in Neutral unless the engine is running and towing the car if it's not in Neutral can damage the transfer case...

Anybody had to deal with this yet?

Rolling it onto a flat bed is no problem.

Re: If your 4x4 JGC needs to be towed...

There is a method to get the tcase into neutral manually, IIRC its a pull cord in the center console somewhere, the owners manual mentions it.

EDIT: User Guide:

MANUAL PARK RELEASE 8–SPEED
• In order to push or tow the vehicle in cases where the transmission will not shift
out of PARK (such as a dead battery), a Manual Park Release is available.
• Follow these steps to use the Manual Park Release:
• Open the center console and locate the Manual Park Release cover, remove it by
snapping the cover away from the console hinges.
• Using a screwdriver or similar tool, push the metal latch in towards the tether
strap.
• While the metal latch is the open position, simultaneously pull upwards on the
tether strap until it clicks and releases out of the park position.
NOTE:
To prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally, firmly apply the parking brake.
• To Disengage the Manual Park Release Lever:
• To disengage the Manual Park Release apply tension upward while pushing the
release latch towards the tether to unlock the lever.
• Once the tension has been released and the lever has been unlocked be sure it is
stowed properly and locks into position.
NOTE:
Be sure to replace the cover by snapping it back in place.

Ok, that's good to know. You still have to release the parking brake using the manual release lever in the center console, right?

Noob questions, I know but that's my first 4x4...

Strongly advise getting an owners manual, as there is additional instruction on towing a disabled vehicle where the engine won't run, e.g. don't tie down a quadralift vehicle except by the axles, no dolly tows, no flat tows if no transfer case with neutral, etc. along with how to invoke those modes when the engine won't start.

I second the idea of reading the owner's manual. Many of the questions asked here have answers spelled out in the owners manual. If the time comes and you need to refresh your memory, it will easier finding the info again in the manual than trying to find an old thread.

In addition to the paper manual, I suggest keeping the downloaded version up to date. The search function in .pdf format is better than the paper manual or searching JeepGarage.

Re: If your 4x4 JGC needs to be towed...

Thanks. I read the manual, but was curious how you get the Jeep on a flat bed - it requires pulling it onto the flat bed on all 4 wheels (which you're not supposed to do unless you put the transfer case in Neutral) but I understand just pulling it onto the bed is not a problem.

I'm more worried what happens if I got towed for illegal parking one day (not that I park illegaly but you never know) - I'm pretty sure the towing company guys are not going to read the manual...

EDIT: Also, just to be clear - the manual does not answer the main question I asked: how do you get the Jeep on the flat bed if you can't put the transfer case in Neutral?

For the record this puts the transmission in neutral, not the transfer case. If you flat tow this will not get around putting the transfer case in neutral.

I've seen them towing jeeps. They do this for a living and are least interested in dealing with a law suite. When they need to tow any locked 4x4 they will put one set of wheels on dolly and the other set lifted on the tow-truck wheel lift. This keeps all 4 wheels off road. It's amazing how fast they put the dolly and wheel lift on. 5 minutes and they're gone. The manual documents it as a recommended way to tow the JGC 4x4 (page 563):
====================>8===================
The manufacturer recommends towing with all wheels OFF the ground. Acceptable methods are to tow the vehicle on a flatbed or with one end of vehicle raised and the opposite end on a towing dolly.
