Im coming back to jeep

After selling my 2014 GC Limited almost a year ago and leasing a 2015 Ford Explorer, its time to come back home to the Jeep Family.

Im looking into a 2015 GC Overland. Was curious if anyone knew of good lease specials or upcoming specials that I (or the community) could take advantage of. Would consider purchasing if it was an insanely good deal.

Pros & Cons of Ford Explorer

PROS:
- Extremely roomy. Seriously, if you need three rows of seating than this is the vehicle for you.
- Solid Stance. Did not get pushed around on the highway at all. Its like sitting in a tank
- Changeable Radio Background. You can change the background image on the radio. Its a cool little feature that doesnt make or break the vehicle, just fun.
- Huge cargo space. With the third row down there was a ton of room. Alot wider of a space as well.

CONS:
- Confusing Voice Activated Everything. In the jeep you just hit the voice button and say "Find Address _______". Ford you have to push the button then say "Navigation, Find an address, Address ______". Its just confusing to remember and not intuitive.
- Gas Milage. Terrible. The jeep is no prince but it atleast has a 26 gallon tank. The ford tank is 16 GALLONS! It makes it seem like youre burning through gas much quicker
-Door is too far from driver. In the Jeep you can rest your elbow comfortable on the window sill of the driver door. The Fords doors seem so far away from your seat that its a stretch to make that happen.
- Driver's Seat. This is by far the biggest reason for me getting rid of this vehicle. The front padding is not long enough, needs more length under your thighs. Most Importantly (and this might only affect me) is the seat cushion layout. Most seats have a flat area and then the sides bolster up to keep you centered in the seat. The Ford has a higher center cushion than the side bolstering. Meaning it creates a crevice in the drivers seat that is exactly where your thighs would rest. For me, this actually pinches a nerve and causes my leg to fall asleep. Its incredibly uncomfortable to me and I spend a lot of time driving.

Re: Im coming back to jeep

It's funny, but even in the Escape I can't use the window sill as an arm rest. I haven't looked into it, but maybe it has something to do with side air bags needing room to deploy.

Completely agree on the arm rest. I rented an Explorer last year, and the arm rests were just too far away. I can't stand a free-floating elbow on a long drive.

The Explorer I rented could go just as far on one tank as my Jeep, despite the smaller tank. I wanted to love the Explorer because my '13 JGC Limited V6 gets about 15 MPG (combined). That's probably what I should be getting in an SRT.

The seats were softer in the Explorer than the JGC, and the second row was much more comfortable than the JGC. If the Explorer driver seat didn't have the open feel like I was driving an old 15 passenger van, I'd probably get an Explorer.

Re: Im coming back to jeep

I had an explorer from 2011 until the end of last year. Constant problems with computer stuff. Biggest issue was the gas gauge. Never worker. Two dealerships couldn't fix it. One even replaced the entire tank. Ran out of gas twice. On a long trip it would go from half tank and plummet to "ten miles to empty ". I would fill it up and put nine gallons in it so obviously not almost empty. Other times it would run out of gas. Front seats comfortable. Voice recognition was terrible. Backseat had no leg room. So glad it's gone. My new overland puts it to shame.

Re: Im coming back to jeep

My issues with the Explorer that made me go with Jeep were:

- No low range gear option. I had to step up to the Limited to get the rock crawler gear, but at least I could get it. The Explorer has selectable terrain modes like the Jeep, but lacks a low range setting. I won't buy any 4 wheel drive without a low range if I can avoid it. The few times I needed low range in my last truck, it was a saving grace. One time included having to climb over a tree trunk that had fallen across my driveway. I wouldn't have gotten to work otherwise.

- The newest Explorer looks too much like a mini van. It doesn't look like an SUV. The Grand Cherokee may not look as tough as the Wrangler, but at least it's classy looking, with a bit of a growl in the grill. The Explorer looks like a baby hauler and has too many cues from that horrible looking Ford Edge.

Re: Im coming back to jeep

I would add that the explorer was very disappointing in the snow. Even in snow mode.

Re: Im coming back to jeep

I find the Explorer doesnt handle any weather too well. When it snowed here in Dallas (Yes, it does snow in Texas), the explorer didnt grip the road well. The front tire spin was significant from a full stop.

If anyone has any friends that are looking for an explorer (or enemies you want to see driving an explorer), mine is up on lease trader.

Please help me get back to jeep by getting out of ford!

Protect1989, Will you be going back to a Black Forest Green JGC? It seems there are so few of them out there, so when I see a photo of one, I do a double take as I find it gorgeous.

I dont think Ill be going back. Possibly because theyre impossible to find but also because ive already owned it. So im either going black or that dark metallic.

I got a ton of compliments on that color though. It truly did change colors from Black in the shade to Dark Green in the sun. People loved it.
