Initial Impressions - Overland 4x4 5.7L

First of all I want to thank everyone here. This is my first Jeep and the information here got me very comfortable with my purchase. I ended up buying a black-on-black Overland 4x4 with the 5.7L HEMI and rear DVD. Traded in my '04 Acura TL. Got the Overland with the Tread Lightly discount.

I won't spend a lot of time reiterating what others have said about the HEMI, only that it has quite a bit of power. Driving at 80 MPH at 2k RPM... enough said. I'm tracking about 14 - 15 mpg, still on first tank of gas.

This vehicle is extremely well put together. It corners better than a Pathfinder we use to own and feels as good as my Acura in turns without the torque steer.

My JGC came with the 430N. I didn't get much time with the 730N in a test drive WK2, so I don't have any basis for a relative comparison. But I'm generally impressed with the entertainment system. My iPhone4 and wife's 3GS both work very well via bluetooth (no pairing issues, no connection issues). Bluetooth music streaming sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, sometimes works at 2x normal speed... but my expectations were low. The center console USB charges both phones. The 3GS plays music through the center console USB, the iPhone 4 doesn't.

I was pleasantly surprised (because I didn't see it mentioned in any threads here) that the 430N (and possibly the 730N - I just don't know) can output TWO simultaneous sources to the backseat entertainment system. For example, you can have one headset listening/watch a DVD while the other is set to Sirius Backseat TV. The screen in the back splits vertically in half in this mode. I was also impressed with the ability to pause, rewind, fast forward Sirius Radio.

One surprise was that the 430N gave me navigation directions in the EVIC. I wasn't expecting this based on comments in these forums.

The range on the key fob is ridiculous (in a good way). I've started my Overland from at least 200ft away (while outside) and even accidentally raised the tailgate from that distance. I haven't yet figured out the max distance - but I will keep pushing it.

I haven't experienced any of the issues mentioned on these forums. The one annoyance I've seen so far is that 430N doesn't seem to go to the night setting when it's dark - though it's set to AUTO (I've tripled checked). Any thoughts? The headlamps do turn on when it's dark but I'm not sure if they're working off the same sensor.

Wife wants me to get running boards to make it easier for the kids to get in and out. Is there a way to have it always lower the vehicle when you put it in park (without having to push the lower/park button)?

I will post more impressions when I have them but as of now I am VERY impressed with my first Jeep. If it means anything, friends and family were surprised (in a negative way) when they heard I was buying a JGC but once they saw it their jaws dropped in awe.

Congrats! I also made the plunge thanks to this forum and the members who make it work. The secret to great mileage in the Hemi is to use the cruise control and resist the urge to marshal the 360 ponies that are on tap. I've seen actual (fill the tank) 22mpg on a long highway trip from IL to WI and back and 15mpg in the suburban crawl and the engine is still fresh.

Congrats robg, from what I've read on the forum (no WK2 myself yet) the day/night of the navi is tied to the dash brightness controller. Make sure that's not clicked up too high. I believe that overrides the day/night of the dash and navi. That might do it. I'm sure other owners can be more helpful.

Re: Initial Impressions - Overland 4x4 5.7L

I must drive differently from everyone else in the world. My new Hemi 2011 JGC is at 12.3 mpg at about 120 miles right now of 80/20 highway/city driving. The family hauler is a 2008 Toyota Sienna AWD and it seemed hundreds of people were posting mileage over 20 mpg with that, when we get 16 with it.

Congrats on the new Overland.

The only way to lower and raise it is with the up/down buttons for the Quadra Lift.

Wow the 730 can't do that, I wish it did cause I have that feature on my portable Sirius in another car and love the ability to rewind something that I missed or a good song. Always wondored why the 730 does not have the ability to do that since it has a hard drive. Had a 730 in my 08 Limited as well.

Thanks! This worked just as you described.
