Installing WK2 Spacers

Hi everyone, I recently installed 1.25" spacers from Lenny, which look great. I found that the factory lugs extended past the spacers. I thought that the factory wheels that I have would allow enough clearance for the extended lugs behind the wheel. Basically I wouldn't have to cut the lugs. I drove around like this for 3 weeks with no problems.

I ended up getting a screw in one of my tires which I plugged (keep a kit in the Jeep). Then I though if I get a flat my spare tire wouldn't go on due to the lugs extending past the spacers. I originally thought to drill holes in the spare wheel to allow the lugs to clear. Then I thought maybe I'll cut the lugs. I took off the rear wheel and noticed that the lugs were digging into the wheel. It turns out that the rear lugs are a little longer than the fronts. The two rear rims had grooves in the wheel but the fronts were ok. I decided to just cut all 20 lugs then I re-installed the spacers and wheels. (That was yesterday)

(Today) We went for a ride and my wife says, hey did you do something to the car? I said yes, I adjusted the wheel spacers. She said, oh it's riding smooth and not vibrating on my side anymore. Turns out that when she drove the Jeep she couldn't feel the vibration but when she was in the passenger seat she could. I'm glad I decided to cut the lugs. I'm going to the dealer on Monday to purchase 20 lugs and just throw them by the spare. I used a portable band saw to cut the lugs so it was real easy. I made my cuts the on the 4th thread.

Moral of the story; Listen to your wife.
She told me she mentioned it before.

Thanks for the post. Until now I hadn't considered that my spare wheel may have issues with my spacers if I have to use it, as I don't believe the wheel is the same as the ones I have on the corners. I'll have to look at it and make sure I'm properly prepared in the event of a flat. Haven't had the issues you described with my 20's, but glad to hear you got it worked out.

Yea, the spare is definitely something to look into. I keep plugs and a small air compressor in the back but if you get a side wall puncture then it's game over. Better to check it and find out at home then on the road.

I have the same rims, I hope this is not an issue with the 1.5s I'm getting Thursday. FYI, I picked up a spare rim on Ebay for $60.00. You might want to consider carrying a full spare with you.

I think the 1.5s will be fine. My spare is a 245/65/18 steel rim. Post some pics after you get them on.

I've been looking into getting the 1.25" spacers on the same rims. Are you saying 1.25" won't work w/o modification?

I'm not sure, they may work fine for you. What made me look into it was my concern for the spare tire in a emergency. I'm in South FL and I constantly see people on the side of I95 with flats.

In my case the rear studs were a little longer than the fronts. I didn't have to cut the front studs. I just did it to be able to get my spare tire on. Other wise I would need to drill holes in the spare to be able to slip the extended studs through it.

If I could start over I would have ordered 1.5s for the rear and 1.25s for the front. It looks to me like the front tires stick out a little more than the rear. Then I would buy a spare wheel just like the ones on the corners. My riding tires are 265/60/18 and my spare is 245/65/18. I would just put the existing tire on the new wheel. Then there would be no need to cut the studs.(at least for me, your situation maybe different)

Just verified and the front does stick out more than the rear. I should have done all this before, but live and learn. Here's a few more pic's.

This is great info! Thanks for posting. I've had the same impression that the rear wheels should be spaced out slightly more than the front. When I measure the distance from outside fender to shoulder of tire I get about 1 15/16" for both so it must be that the fender and wheel are both slightly pushed out on the rear. I have larger tires (275/65's) for the record. I think 1.5" spacers would be closest to flush in relation to the corner of the tire to outside fender. But I'm hesitant to go so far out. On the other side I don't want to trim lugs if I go 1.25" spacers. Maybe i should stagger the with 1.25's up front and 1.5's in the rear? Decisions, decisions...
