Insurance Rip-Off for ADDED safety features !!

So I called my insurance company (Metropolitan) to transfer my 2015 Overland with (Technology Package) to a 2017 Summit.

25% more a year !! I asked why? She asked does it have more safety features and I said yes. It has Lane Assist. She said that's why.

Difference in Sticker is only about $5K. And the rate doesn't (and hasn't changed) for the first few years. So it not the age difference. It's the rating, which doesn't change (generally).

Their argument is the Safety features are more expensive to fix. This is total B.S. The odds are that the Safety features will more likely save them $$$ than cost them.

They have a rating for each Vehicle and I was asking why my wifes 2011 VW CC cost more than the 2015 Overland. She said it has to do with the rating. Which includes everything. Cost to Repair, Bodily Injury, Frequency of Accidents etc. The CC was rated like "30". The Overland was rated like 28. The Summit was rated 55 !!

One thing I can think of was the Overland does not come Standard with the Technology Package but the Summit does. So the difference in "Safety" features between the two (in Stock Configuration) is significant (not just lane assist). You'd think they would use the VIN number to know exactly what they are insuring. But I doubt statistics are gathered based on if a Vehicle has Technology Package or not and probably only goes as far as the Trim Level.

Might try pricing insurance elsewhere, but for handling claims they have been excellent, and the overall cost isn't that terrible.

Re: Insurance Rip-Off for ADDED safety features !!

If the increase is to your comp and collision than it is not BS. We all know these systems are expensive which is why so many people today buy extended warranties.

If the increase is to liability or no-fault, then they are lying to you. They should provide a break down.

Re: Insurance Rip-Off for ADDED safety features !!

I had to do some serious shopping earlier this year when my younger daughter became a licensed driver. It was an interesting exercise, but very necessary. So I'll suggest you do the same. For me, AAA came out ahead of the others and they even blew away what I was paying for homeowners and umbrella, too.

Re: Insurance Rip-Off for ADDED safety features !!

I just got my new 6 month insurance bill in the mail. $600. Was $478.

State Farm and includes
MULTIPLE LINE discount
ACCIDENT-FREE discount
VEHICLE SAFETY discount.

I lost the Annual mileage discount which was about $40.

So I guess it went up basically from $519 to $600 a 15% increase.

State is Nebraska.
Age 42.

Liability: Bodily Injury 250,000/500,000 Property damage 250,000
500 deductible comprehensive
500 deductible collission
Medical Payments
Emergency Road Service
Car Rental and Travel Expense 80% per day, $1,000 max
Uninsured Motor Vehicle
Bodily Injury 250,000/500,000
Underinsured Motor Vehicle
Bodily Injury 250,000/500,000

Have State Farm as well... my 6 month premium was $387 on my 16 HA. Roughly $25 more than it was on my 14 Overland.

No accidents or tickets here either. It all boils down to age and region.

How is your insurance $387? My 15 overland with adv tech (no accidents or tickets) is just shy of $600

Premiums are based on your age and the vehicle claim and repair rates for your region. I'm guessing the region you live in is why.

Fair enough. I'm a 27 year old male in Dallas. Would explain it

I pay $650 per year on my summit no accidents or tickets and good limits not just the minimum. I do carry a $500 deductable not $200. The higher deductable will help lower the rate some try pricing it with that. No accidents in 30 years of driving except scuffed some paint on a rental once but my credit card benifit secondary insurace paid that $500 deductable so no out of pocket. Check your credit card benifits surprising some of the various benifits in there that people dont think to take advantage of.
