Angry Interesting visit to the DMV today ...

I went in to register my wife's new ride today ('14 SRT), a couple of things were interesting:

Agent told me it used to be about a week before I'd get my official title, but since the state of Oklahoma installed their new 'efficient' software, it is now taking about two weeks.

There is a new $12.50 fee for tire disposal. I asked about it, she told me that it was the states position that someday I'd need to dispose of the tires that came on the vehicle, even though the fee would also be charged by the tire store when I bought new tires.

Re: Interesting visit to the DMV today ...

When it comes time to dispose of the tires, drop them off at DMV. Keep your receipt so you can show them you already paid the fee.

Any problem with that the JeepGarage members can take up a collection to bail you out.

I'm no fan of paying government fees, but upfront tire disposal fees have some merit. We have a problem with illegal tire dumping in Georgia. Collect disposal fees upfront and you may end up with fewer tire dumps.

Unscrupulous tire dealers collect disposal fees from customers to cover govt. approved tire disposal, then they dump the tires on unattended private property, pocketing the cash while forcing the property owner to pay to clean it up.

It's a result of politicians afraid to use the "Tax" word. Instead they introduce more "Fees".

Re: Interesting visit to the DMV today ...

If they charged the tax then refunded it when you dropped them off for proper disposal there would be less abandoned tires................ just a thought

If you think illegal tire dumping is bad, check out legal government type tire disposal. Huge environmental disaster just east of Silicon Valley where the disposal folks just dumped them out in the open... then they caught fire.

Re: Interesting visit to the DMV today ...

Québec also charges fees on new tires. At least we don't pay it again upon vehicle registration (for new vehicles).
The idea behind it was to pay for the recycling of used tires which can be an enviro nightmare, especially of they catch fire as stated above.

Re: Interesting visit to the DMV today ...

Will someone explain how the tire disposal fee charged by the state actually pays for tire disposal? Can we follow the money or does it disappear into a general fund to pay for welfare or something?
