Question Interior engine noise 3.0 vs 3.6

So I test drove a 2016 Overland 3.6 and a 2016 Limited 3.0 and noticed a significant amount of difference in interior engine noise between the two. I thought the diesel would be louder but to my surprise the 3.6 was actually quite a bit louder. Is that what everyone else is seeing also? Those are the only two I have driven to this point so I have no other comparison.

Thanks

Re: Interior engine noise 3.0 vs 3.6

I haven't driven a diesel but I find it hard to believe that it's quieter inside than the Pentastar. I can't even hear mine running with the windows up... not even under acceleration.

Well thats what I expected, I was really disapointed in how much engine noise I heard in the cabin. I need to go test drive another. I am trying to be open minded about the 3.6 as I am leaning towards the Diesel but dont want to spend that extra $$$.

Re: Interior engine noise 3.0 vs 3.6

The Pentastar was very quiet in my 14 Overland and 16 HA... so that was surprising to me to read that.

yeap, I test drove a Diesel and within 5 minutes I jumped in the 3.6 so there was no time to speak of between drives. I will report back after another test drive hopefully this weekend.

Did the diesel Jeep you drove have the noise reduction package with the special glass and whatnot?

Re: Interior engine noise 3.0 vs 3.6

3.6 revs higher while accelerating and driving which makes it noisier. It is quieter at idle than the diesel, though.

Just my opinion. I test drove both almost two years ago. I bought the diesel.

Re: Interior engine noise 3.0 vs 3.6

I have owned the V8 and V6 and between those two I can say the V6 offers an extremely quiet interior with little to no engine noise. The V8 is pretty noisy inside, atleast during acceleration...a good noisy, but when I bought my V6 I couldn't believe how much more quiet it was inside. I heard the diesel was noisy as heck, but maybe that's changed on the newer models.

There's no such thing... The Summit has more acoustic glass though.

I see no point in getting the diesel unless you are a fanatic. It's more expensive, more expensive maintenance and more things to go wrong. But that's all highly subjective, I understand.

Re: Interior engine noise 3.0 vs 3.6

Say what you want about the Diesel GC, but there isn't another SUV on the road that can compare in acceleration, towing, AND fuel economy. Find me an SUV as big as ours that gets 30mpg. Yes, there is a light diesel grumble during idle and acceleration, but it is no louder than most cars (just sounds different). I actually like the sound of diesels. At cruise it plods along at about 1700RPM and you can't even tell you are in a diesel it is so quiet. Obviously Im biased but not a fanatic (this is my first diesel) and I think the 3.0 is a worthy engine.

Re: Interior engine noise 3.0 vs 3.6

The Diesel I drove was a limited, the 3.6 was an overland. I really did like how the Diesel drove compared to the 3.6 but I am not too keen on the extra $4500 to get it. I definitely will want to do another test drive of each. I will tell you that I have partial hearing loss and it is possible that the 3.6 is just more audible in the range I hear better in than the Diesel.

In addition to the above, when you sell your ECD JGC, you will recoup the extra you paid for that engine upgrade over what the 3.6 will sell for.
