Intro and Oil Change Question

Hey Everyone - I'm a longtime reader and first time poster. I ordered a 2012 Laredo X with Off Road Adventure 1 and V6 engine in Mineral Gray in January of this year and have loved it ever since. In the last couple months my girlfriend decided she needed to replace her 99 4runner. She was pretty adamant about not having the same Jeep as me but she concluded the Grand Cherokee was the best option for the money. She told me she wanted a 2012 Laredo 4x4 with the Laredo E Group and Uconnect in Stone White. I only found one matching her description within 300 miles and it was right here in town. I emailed the dealer yesterday afternoon and we picked it up last night for $29k out the door with an agreement they would add all weather mats and side steps.

Now that I've got my intro out of the way, here is my issue. My girlfriends Jeep was manufactured in April and has been sitting on the lot for 6 months but it only has 64 miles on it. Jeep recommends changing the oil every 6 months or 8,000 miles. When I asked the dealer about this all he said is that they could do the first free oil change whenever we wanted. Does the Pentastar come with a special break-in oil? Should I have the oil changed right away or wait? Normally I would take it in around 4k miles and then every 8k miles or 6 months but I'm not sure on this one since its been sitting for 6 months. What do you guys think?

The last thing I want to say is thank you to everyone that contributes to this forum. I've learned soo much from reading about other people's experiences.

Jason

Re: Intro and Oil Change Question

No special break in oil. Current oil does not contain sulfur, so it is not going to absorb moisture and create acid over time like the old days. Check the oil after a hundred miles or so to see if its milky, if not just follow the manufacture's recommendation (8000 miles, 6months, oils change indicator) starting from when you picked it up.

No functional need for an early oil change unless it would ease your mind, an emotional response but nothing wrong with changing early.

Re: Intro and Oil Change Question

Welcome. Like others have said, there's no break-in oil. I'd drive it at least 1000 miles. I typically do first change at 1500-2000, but it depends on how long it was on the lot. I had a couple of cars that were on the lot for 1 year and more. On those, I changed around 500-700.

Re: Intro and Oil Change Question

I plan to have my first oil change done in a week at 3k miles. Mainly for the purpose if switching over to synthetic and that I have some free oil change vouchers. Anyone know the difference in cost for synthetic change at dealer? I assume ill be paying the difference.
