Is anyone running E-85 Gas in their WK2 V6?

Looks like I'll either be getting my 2011 GC Overland V6 (mineral gray / new saddle) which I ordered on 1/13 either this Friday, or next Monday. It arrived at the dealership today, and I'm out of town. I may not be back until Sunday, hence picking her up next Monday at the latest. In any event, on my way out of town today, I see my local gas station offers E-85 and it's selling for $2.79 a gallon, compared to $3.11 a gallon for regular unleaded (87 octane).

So, on to my question. Seeing that the WK2 V6 can run the E-85 Gasoline, is anyone doing that? Is there anything detrimental to running E-85? Is it counter productive in that it's cheaper, but won't yield as high an MPG as regular unleaded? I've never taken the time to research the differences, and know that only a few cars or trucks can handle the E-85. Just want to make sure I'm not going to do something that will cause future reliability issues, or additional maintenance issues. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

I haven't bothered. E85 usually ends up giving about 20-25% worse fuel mileage than the E10 gasoline. There's only a couple stations nearby that sell E85, and those generally show E85 to save about 10-15% over the regular gas. With my Shell credit card, I already get a 5% rebate on my fuel, so there's just zero reason for me to give it a go.

It won't hurt the Pentastar engine, but unless you can find a real good deal on the fuel, at most you'll be refueling more often. At worst, you'll end up paying more.

I wouldn't push this car luck. Book said accepts 87 it does mean it takes anything below, you got modern car not tractor from 1930... Possible downsides: detonation, overheats, decrease in performance and gas mileage, etc. Would you need this for 20 cent's you are saving? As i know in compare to Jeep, Toyota's trucks like FJ or 4Runner required premium gasoline in book, so you already driving something better/cheaper than this requirement.
Get Hess, Shell, BP, Exxson etc cards, they are offering discounts instead.

e-85 sucks hands down. Do some research and you will see hard data that proves that it costs more in the long run. you loose power get worse mpg and use more e85 which costs more. even e10 which is most 87 octane branded gas blows these days. try and find a station that sells pure gasoline. try puregas.com to find one near you and see the difference.

I realized ethanol truly sucked when my snowblower started acting funny. Small engines hate ethanol and cars do too.

Contrary to popular belief, E85's effective octane rating (R+M)/2 is ~95. The only downside is the reduction in fuel economy since E85 has less energy content and thus you need a higher fuel to air ratio to achieve similar performance. The net effect can vary widely with some vehicles getting as much as 30% worse fuel economy while others average around 10%. Some, such as Saab, have their engines tuned to get the same MPG regardless of fuel.

I would say give a couple tanks a try (to get as close to true E85 running through the system as possible) and see what you MPG is. Only then can you calculate whether it's more cost effective.

For those who insist it's a bad fuel because their leaf blowers and yard tractors don't like it that's not even close to a fair and proper comparison, Those engines and fuel systems were never designed to run it. When comparing e-85 in a flex fuel motor it sucks. You cant have the best of both worlds. Yes, a turbo motor that is properly tuned for e-85 will make big power but you cant be tuned for both. there has to be a compromise and the compromise in the jeeps case is that it gets worse mpg and less power on e-85. this is proven.

and if you wanna talk about small engines I was referring to E10 which is in almost Evey gas stations fuel these days. 10% ethanol is unavoidable where I live and in most areas so what is someone supposed to do if they want to run a lawnmower or snow blower on regular pump gas, there is no solution other then going to the airport and getting aviation gas which has no ethanol.

I think it would be nice to get "real information from E-85 tests" with the new Pentastar Engine. Do you have any links?


In my area you can only buy gas with 95 or 98 octane, sometimes 100.

Remember, your octane rating and the ratings we use in the states are completely different. Europe uses RON (Research Octane), North America uses and average of RON and MON (Motor Octane) or (RON+MON)/2. European octane numbers run, on average, about 5 points higher.

Do you have this data on the V6 Pentastar engine? I don't really think it's "proven" just yet.

I used E85 in the WK2 that had 5K miles (I think). Cruising down the freeway with the cruise control set at 70 MPH had the evic MPG showing 16.8-17 MPG. Same speed with gas and I was getting 23 MPG.

E85 is a piece of shit and if I ever get a car that can use E85, I would never use it. IMO

Unless I'm turning in a rental car and have to fill up the tank to were I got it LOL

e-85 MPG in my 07 WK 4.7 was 20-25% less compared to e-10.

It is. a buddy of mine has a 2011 Grand Cherokee and put in e-85 and it was the worst experience of his life. Terrible gas millage even when he drove like a grandma. Is real world proof enough for you. Why don't you try it yourself and see what I'm talking about man. I wouldn't come on here with erroneous information.
