Re: Is it Easy being Green?

Bottom line, we looked at Audi, BMW, and Volvo and after every test drive we were looking to get back to the Jeep dealership. Not one of them could touch the Jeep, as for options Jeep equiped way more for thousands less. Dont get me started, my undecisive wife made us shop for a month test driving so many vehicle just trying to out do the Jeep; it never happened! Plus at the end of the day our Mineral Grey WK2 looks so damn good in our drive, its like art.

Re: Is it Easy being Green?

I don't know what's getting smoked here but I shopped BMW X5 and with the V8, nav and same options I have in my Jeep Limited the price was $75K. Now I have the 5.7L Limited with 20" wheels and I only paid $38K before tax and I didn't even haggle for that price. You might be able to get a base model something or other but not a V8 and loaded for even close to $38K. At least thats my experience.

I almost bought it. Here it is. Doesn't even look half as good as the jeep.

X5 $75K

My Jeep Limited 5.7L $38K

Re: Is it Easy being Green?

I have a friend who has an X5 and LOVES BMWs. She rode in our WK2 and when I told her I only paid $32.5k for it, her response was "I've got to stop buying german cars don't I"?

What kind of cross bars are those? Did you have the dealer install them?

Re: Is it Easy being Green?

An X5 for 75K??? Where?

Check truecar. A X5 35i with leather and nav is under 50K and as I said my buddy just got one fairly well loaded for under 50K and that was with 3rd row seating, which is really why he bought it. The Overland Summit he looked at was very close in price. It had some nice toys, but then the BMW did too and 3rd row! Unless you opt for the higher level X5's, such as the 50i, price should not be a factor between a X5 and Overland. Now if you're talking about a Laredo or Limited....that's a different story.
And no, I don't consider the Overland and Laredo the "same" after driving both. The air suspension is a significant difference.

Cheers,

He just said he was comparing a V8 WK2 to a V8 X5...so that means the 50i.

All you have to do is build them to similar specs.

Per Jeep.com a loaded V6 Overland Summit with rear entertainment MSRP's at $48,915.

The X5 35i STARTS at $48,395. Thats no nav, no leather, no wood trim, no keyless entry and start. Base.

You have to step up to a X5 35i Premium, add nappa leather to get the leather dash trim, add the convienience package to get nav, keyless entry and start, rear camera, sensors, add the cold weather package to get heated wheel and rear seats, add the rear entertainment and the adaptive cruise. Price? $69,845. Thats similarly equipped to a Summit, over $20,000 more.

Its even worse when you factor in the deal you can get on the Jeep vs the deal you can get on the X5.

You want a V8? Gotta add the same options to the X5 5.0, and that brings the price to $75,895. The Jeep? $50,110. The X5 is $26,000 more.

So, unless you're looking at an X5 that is NOT comparable to an Overland Summit in features and options, price is CERTAINLY a consideration seeing that a comparable X5 is ~50% more expensive.

If you have a lesser X5...you have to compare it to a lesser Jeep. The X5 is just a much more expensive vehicle.

Re: Is it Easy being Green?

This stuff drives me bonkers! I've driven the 50 and 35i versions. The 50 is NOT comparable to the Jeeps V8. It's FAR more performance. The BMW v6 is comparable to the V8 Hemi, but the BMW engine is still superior. In the end there is no matching ground for engines.
So again, a X5 with leather, HEATED seats, Nav and 3rd row is certainly worth considering against the Overland IF you don't need the Jeep's more serious off-road ability. The idea of equipping these two SUV's to match is rather silly. It really can't be done. Each will have specific inherent advantages: The BMW will have a serious performance edge on the road and the Jeep will rule off-road. You can set either to be very luxurious and have some nice toys with reasonable pricing under 50K. Price is not the decider on this. Sorry. And there's always the SRT8.
If you need the 3rd row then the GC is a rather poor value no matter how hot the seats get. If you want the better poor terrain machine then buying ANY X5 isn't a smart choice. I'm a yacht broker and I see no division between the people paying 45K for an Overland Summit or an X5. So far the two owners I know at the club bought their Overlands coming out of a LR and X5. I don't hear anyone happy about the "value" of a Jeep (Though I think it is a good value). Rather people seem a bit shocked at these things costing 45K or more.

The X5 v8 only has 400HP and thats with a twin turbo slapped on it. Jeep 5.7L Hemi is 360HP so I have to say they are pretty close, infact the jeep has a faster engine since it is without turbos. Put twin turbos on the Jeep and you will be in the mid 400s. You can't compare a V6 X5 to a V8 Jeep. Thats just stupid. The v6 x5 is 300hp and the v6 Jeep is 290hp. That is about the same sorry. Oh and it only achieves the extra 10 horses with twin turbos. LOL.

Yep, dealer threw them in for free along with slush mats. They are MOPAR factory rails.

The standard X5 35i does 0-60 in something very close to 6 seconds flat. BMW says 6.4. The 8 speed tranny pulls a lot of performance from the 6 and it feels very strong. The Jeep's Hemi feels primitive when pushed hard by comparison. It's a powerful engine, yet somehow the much less powerful BMW V6 somehow gets it done.
Understand: I'm on the Jeep team here, but it sounds like you have not driven a new X5 35i as you're looking at what is on paper. Driving the V8 Jeep against the V6 BMW shows that BMW's V6 is well into the range of the V8's abilities on the road. The v6 in the GC felt awful to me, but I sure didn't feel that way about the 6 in the X5.

Things will probably change quite a bit when the new tranny hits the GC. BUT....If I didn't need the Jeep's strengths off road, I'd be looking a lot harder at the X5. And if the LR4 wasn't junk......
