Is the 2011+ officially a WK or a WK2

I was having this discussion in another forum recently, and it is quite confusing, even more so for international markets where we had the WH prior to 2011.

The way I see it is the model numbers have been carried over from the pre-2011 Grand, so effectively the 2011+ Grand is still 'officially' a WK. In Australia we had the WH from 2005-2010, to designate the car was built in Europe. But now that we get US built cars we have adopted WK model numbers, with U to identify RHD cars.

Why did Jeep decide to stick with the WK model designator instead of cycling up to WL for the 2011?

US 2005-current
WKJH74 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4
WKJP74 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4

Export 2005-2010
WHUH74 GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO (RHD)
WHUP74 GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED (RHD)

Export 2011-current
WKUH74 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 (RHD)
WKUP74 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 (RHD)

The 4th generation 2011-up MY's are referred to as WK2. LOL... don't know why they pick the designations they do.

Yeah, but WK2 is kind of a nickname right? Officially it is still a WK, as far as I can see.

Re: Is the 2011+ officially a WK or a WK2

Not 100% sure but everyone here and every place I read about it refers to them as WK2's.

It is a different platform from the 3rd gen WK's.

Re: Is the 2011+ officially a WK or a WK2

Yeah, that seems to be the common perception they are WK2s (why not WLs I don't understand), but the model numbers have remained the same as the pre 2011 WK. It seems that the '2' was added as an informal qualifier, but the official model identifier is still WK.....?

Anyway I'm bored so thought it might be an interesting discussion.

Re: Is the 2011+ officially a WK or a WK2

From wkjeeps.com around the time of the 2011 4th gen introduction...

"The "WJ" and "WK" are vehicle family code designations assigned by Jeep. At one time it was expected that the letters would progress to "WL" for the 2011-up models, but Jeep decided to stay with "WK", hence the name "WK2" for our new site. Look for continued exclusive information on the upcoming 2011 Grand Cherokee which will start production in just a few months, on May 10th."

So why it looks like WK is still the official designation, everyone and their brother refers to it as WK2 to distinguish it from the previous generation.

LOL...

Re: Is the 2011+ officially a WK or a WK2

This looks like the important bit:

"but Jeep decided to stay with "WK"

And WK2 is just a nickname to differentiate them.....?

I remember reading here a while back, but never confirmed it, that WK 2 originated with Milous.

Re: Is the 2011+ officially a WK or a WK2

Aha! I found an explanation on not progressing the model designator:

Quote:
Typically, codes have changed/progressed for each new vehicle generation. This stopped for awhile when Cerberus decided not to progress the codes on a number of vehicles. They retained "WK" for the new 2011-2016 Grand Cherokee, and continued "LX" for the Chrysler 300. The reason was, they thought it would help to "hide" future vehicle information from suppliers that they were sending proposals to. Instead, it resulted in a lot of confusion for suppliers, dealers, owners, and within the company. All future codes will now be progressed.
What does WK2 mean?
