Is the roof rack really useful?

Has anyone used the roof rack for transporting something like a 14-foot kayak? The rails look very low profile and there doesn't seem to be much separation between the distance between the front and rear crossbars.

In order to be stable, I need to keep the front and rear bars separated a good bit when I have my kayak mounted. Judging strictly by pictures, I'm not sure if the roof rack will be very useful for me.

Also, how do the cross bars attach to the rails? Do they mount to a slot in the top? I don't see any slot on the inside edges....

Here's one of my kayaks (14 foot) on my 4Runner. You can see that the cross bars are fully extended front & rear. Is that do-able on the WK2?

Re: Is the roof rack really useful?

You may be right about the lack of spread between the front and rear bars, not sure about height clearance for a kayak either. Another member had similar lack of spread concerns for fitment of his rooftop clamshell carrier. The rooftop tracks only extend maybe 3/4 towards the front of the vehicle and the track looks like it won't allow the rear bar to slide completely to the rear (photo below).

Thread link below for other crossbar debate and the mounting instructions/diagrams from MOPAR. It does look like these cross bars are more robust than they appear and have locking mechanisms. One of the forum members was going to take a photo of the mounting.

I'll have my rig and the mopar crossbars in hand in two weeks and can report back. Even if they do look solid (Thule is provider), I'll still check if aftermarket alternative is any better.
