Is there any reason for the engine cover?

Other than appearance? I'm thinking it may trap or hold hot air which would not be good. Do any of you leave it off?

Dan

Typically they are there to dissipate noise from the engine bay

And keep dust off. But it traps heat so I took it off.

The cover's there so you don't reach in and hurt yourself!

Why is a warmer engine compartment undesirable? As long as the engine doesn't overheat, I thought combustion efficiency is improved in warmer air temps.

Lower intake air temperature can increase hp/torque up to a point. Of course, the engine works best at the proper internal temperature which is controlled by the thermostat.

Re: Is there any reason for the engine cover?

It's mainly there to contain noise from the fuel injectors.

Re: Is there any reason for the engine cover?

Come on people. It's there to look cool and to cover an otherwise unattractive box of hoses, wires and such. I have it on my Touareg and LS 460. Neat and clean. No insulating properties whatsoever.

Re: Is there any reason for the engine cover?

It just adds weight. I removed mine and saw a dramatic increase in mileage!

I think it is just to make the engine bay look good when the hood is opened.

Cheers,
-A

Re: Is there any reason for the engine cover?

The engine cover doubles as a flipper glass suppressor. Once removed, the flipper glass becomes active and available again. It's amazing!
