Re: Is your Jeep a Truck or an SUV?

I think if you have a hitch, off-road tires, etc. your Jeep is probably more likely to be referred to as a truck as opposed to one that has low-profile tires, no hitch (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

2) As far as tailpipe emissions, it is held against the same standards as a car by the EPA
3) it is not a truck because it is not built as a body on frame
4) as a light duty truck, it can be configured with more cargo capacity than a car, so it may cross into that definition. But it is not a truck.

Therefore my Jeep is simply a RSW or Rugged Station Wagon or 4WD Utility Vehicle as to separate it from those vehicles such as a front wheel drive Buick Enclave Station Wagon / Utility Vehicle.

So, let me get this straight so I understand....

If I asked you what you drive you'd say "a rugged station wagon" or "4wd utility vehicle" ?

I'd bet you're the only human being that has ever said those words in response to that question. Not saying it's the wrong response, just saying you're the only one saying it....

Mine is not a truck, nor an SUV

Mine is a Jeep...very simple.

I could see Clint Eastwood being asked what he prefers to drive and he says "a rugged station wagon"

Re: Is your Jeep a Truck or an SUV?

The SUV moniker came about when they started ruining the utility 4x4's to make them acceptable for women to drive them to Kroger. My 78 Bronco had the designation U-150. This differentiated it from the F-150. No one would ever consider it an SUV as it lacked carpeting, power windows, automatic transmission and fancy stereo. Heck, even the seats were extras when I ordered it. Base, it came just with a driver's seat. There are very few utility 4x4's any more. The closest would probably be the Wrangler and the FJ Cruiser.

On the other hand, my GC is much more comfortable on the drive to and from wherever I am going to abuse it and, so far, is as capable.

Well I guess you have the women to thank for your additional comfort then, eh?

I've learned never to complain about women after 45 years of marriage. But the GC just doesn't have the masculine panache of the old utility 4x4's.

Re: Is your Jeep a Truck or an SUV?

My insurance card declares my Jeep as a station wagon. I'm in Michigan.

But I call my Jeep a truck more than saying SUV.

Wouldn't the most accurate classification be Vehicle, General Purpose? ;-)

Re: Is your Jeep a Truck or an SUV?

Well I've heard Ford Explorers and Chevy Blazers referred to as jeeps.
IMO a Jeep is indeed an SUV by class, from the family of trucks.
So I do sometimes refer to it as a truck.
