Have you noticed how the rear suspension and exhaust are totally exposed on most of today's SUVs? I was behind a Land Rover LR4 today and boy oh boy what an ugly rear end!
The suspension and the exhaust on the WK2 are well camouflaged. Jeep did an amazing job on aesthetics!
Great topic, I can't believe how many vehicles like that are out there, poor engineering at its finest...
Ford engineers found a solution for the Explorer though, they simply designed the rear using styling cues from the front, saving a lot of development costs. Headlamps and taillamps are exactly the same size, and the exhaust tips fit into the same area as the fog lamps. The hatch lid utilizes the same design as the grille. A Better Idea from Ford!
I agree with the OP, however after the lift there is quite a bit more control arm visible. I have always though this was one of the ugliest suv's from the rear....
Vehicle rear ends are very difficult to get right. Most of the time it looks like the design engineers started at the front and gave up somewhere around the C pillar.
However, one company that's been doing a GREAT job on the rear ends is Lincoln (e.g. new MKS).
You don't like the front of the new MKZ? I saw the new MKZ at the DC car show and thought it was beautiful, best looking car in the segment no doubt IMHO.
I have had family who followed me in a convoy comment on the wk2 rear end under neath.. Are the swing arms aluminum? They look it... My wk2 is 1 yr old in march and the underside still looks new...
I don't know if they're aluminum, but they look alot heavier and more off-road capable than any other late model SUV that I've seen in the last two years.
