It is disappointing....

....That the Jeep Wrangler (technically an "SUV") didnt make the list.

And the Grand Cherokee.....which Ive head a rumor is "the most awarded SUV...EVER" chose not to participate.

And yet...half of the vehicles that DID make the list seem much more like cars or maybe even crossovers (if I am being generous) but certainly not SUV's by any classification that I would consider viable.

Fortunately Motor Trend isnt actually well regarded in the industry or by consumers.

Oh...wait...it is.

Opportunity: Missed.

Another example of "We dont need to try to retain customer loyalty or attract new buyers....our name will do everything for us."

It is disappointing...

Re: It is disappointing....

My understanding is that in order to qualify for these types of 'awards' (cough, cough) the vehicle has to be significantly updated/changed from the previous year.

So since the Jeep GC and Wrangler have not had any changes since the last model year, they don't qualify for the 'award'.

Ahhhhh.....

I figured there had to be some sort of fine-print exclusion for why Jeep wouldnt even place in the very category it created.

Well....except for the renegade....

(sigh)

Also it's been said by more than a few people that the Motor Trend COTY contest is decided by which manufacturer wants to pay the most advertising dollars for the award.

Unlike the Chevy Vega, Chevy Volt, Chrysler Potty Cruiser, Ford Probe [proctologist's special] AMC/Renault Alliance, Chevy Citation, Mopar Omni/Horizon, Mopar Aspen/Volare, Mucking Fustang II, and other such examples of advanced engineering and really good ideas to help populate the nation's junkyards.

Personally I think they run that thing to get letters... although I have seen them occasionally go back and apologize for a few of those like the Vega.

According to the guy who has the Volvo Turbo award in his office in Torrance CA, the answer to that is no. It is common folklore though, such as intelligent life on earth.

The GC is still amazing to me, and pretty much everyone who rides in it.

I think these awards are bogus.

In order to claim this, you need hard facts; otherwise it's just slander and helps no one.

Re: It is disappointing....

I think that its safe to say that when it comes to awards....

If you are getting an award...the givers are geniuses capable of seeing through all of the smoke and recognizing your true superiority.

If you are not getting an award....the givers are corrupt, evil doers hell-bent on your singular demise.

In other words...subjectivity.

My point in my original post...was that it was odd to see who was listed and who wasnt.

In one of my former careers I found it interesting that what people DONT say....is often more informative than what they do say.

Merely an opinion. Not looking to stir up any dust.

Everybody chill.....life is good.

I disagree with your slander comment since I was sharing that some people out there have an opinion on what they feel the MT COTY award is based on.

Here are some articles I found with a quick google search of what I was referring too -

I agree it's a great vehicle and for me that's award enough. I could grip a bit about the quality which could be betterbut there are more than enough posts on this forum about that.

Once you realize, per their own writings and descriptions, that by no means are they attempting to award the best vehicle of the year, it makes a little bit of sense.

It doesn't quite help you get over the disbelief that the original Mustang never won, but that emasculated trainwreck the Mustang II did win.
