Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

I live in Ottawa also and this sound is most common when starting below -30. The sound doesn't last long and I assume that it just the sound of cold air being sucked into the manifold. It was -42 this morning and at least it started. I have a 2014 GC Ltd and the same sound was produced by my 2011 GC Laredo X under similar conditions.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

Yeah your right, I figured it has been a cold winter! Our cars get the lovely winter beating, salt/sand /snow and horrible temperatures.

I don't get how you still believe this after a previous poster points out there is a TSB for the real problem (it's not cold air through a manifold). I don't mean to be rude, but please don't post misinformation as it's not helpful.

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

its been in the teens the last week or so, and my 2013 3.6 squeals and whistles for about 30 seconds on cold start up. before this I had a 2006 Chrysler 300 SRT that did the same thing, but no other issues so I guess its normal.

DUDE! There is a TSB for this issue! It's not normal.

Actually, it is normal for a lot of vehicles to do something like this on cold morning starts. Most of us realize that it's generally related to belts and pulleys.

That Jeep has issued a TSB and is willing to replace the idler pulley is great but I suspect the problem will eventually return at some point down the road.

In any case it's more of an annoyance than an actual problem... I think that's what people are trying to say.

I understand what you're trying to say, but I don't buy it. None of my GM's ever squealed like my jeep, neither does any other vehicle (which happen to be all american built) in the near vicinity of my house. It's a defect somewhere. While some might chuckle about it, I can't; everybody who wants to crap on my jeep because it's not what they bought will just use it as an excuse to point fingers and laugh, not exactly a show of high quality / great engineering.

Some people get bent out of shape over a minor trim misalignment somewhere that you would never notice unless pointed out. Well this is far worse IMO, on a harsh cold winter morning, a squeal like this travels incredibly far...

BTDT many times... every vehicle I've ever owned (and that covers the entire US automotive spectrum) and driven in winter has had squeals, groans, howls, whistles or tapping on extreme cold morning starts. It always goes away after things loosen and warm up a little. It never once was worth getting bent out of shape over, or running to the dealer, just a temporary annoyance.

The only vehicle I've owned that doesn't do this is my Honda Accord... but then, it's parked and unused all winter.

It really isn't a defect... it's just extreme cold weather. But if it bothers you, have the TSB performed.

I'll add... a belt dressing spray works as well.

My GM's would have a very soft sound from the power steering; we're talking noticable within 10 feet only. Just a little increase in humming noise. That's acceptable. A harsh squeal that can be detected by neighbours many doors down is not acceptable, especially because none of their cars are doing it either in the same extreme cold weather.

The fact that Jeep can fix this should tell you that it's a defect; sure, it's triggered by the cold, but I can also hear it slightly (now that I'm aware of the noise) under acceleration in the middle of summer too. Starting from a stop light it is sometimes heard in the cabin (with no AC or radio noise), just a lot softer than in these cold winter starts.

I've owned Audi, Ford, and Subaru vehicles that squealed when started in extreme cold.

On the Audi forums, the general opinion was that the cam seals had 'shrunk' slightly and were vibrating from blow-by gases being forced out past them.

Ford and Subaru (new vehicles)? I simply didn't worry about it. No leaks or oil/grease being slung under the hood, so I figured it was the same as the Audi.

Jeep? People have voiced concerns since last winter on these forums. As mentioned, Chrysler has issued a TSB and I had the work performed on Monday (02/16) along with an alignment.

Funny thing is...
I haven't started it from cold since then.
I've been working from home Tuesday and today.
I guess today would be a prime test since it was -10 outside this morning, which means my detached/uninsulated garage should be about 10 degrees inside, but I don't have anywhere to go and I'm not going to start it just to see if it squeals.

UPDATE: The wife wanted to know if the squeal was fixed.... Opened the garage door from the house and used the remote start (cracked a window to listen). No more squeal! So if you live in a cold climate, talk to your dealer about TSB 07-002-15. They will replace an idler pulley and the associated bolt.

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

Update mine was also fixed by the above TSB performed.

If it makes you feel any better my 07 makes that squeal on cold mornings all the time. Well it did for 4+ years when I lived in a place that got cold (upstate NY).
